I used to own one. If you opened the back, you saw a semicircular weight. If you turned the watch, the weight always stayed at the bottom as the watch turned. It was connected to the spring with a ratchet wheel, so when it turned one way it wound up the spring and when it turned the other way nothing happened; the spring stayed wound up. There was a mechanism to prevent it overwinding. If you took the watch off for more than about 2 days, it would wind down and the watch would stop. It was the swinging of your arms that kept it wound up. Of course, you weren't getting something for nothing. Swinging your arms required a tiny bit more energy to wind the spring. I've seen ads for electronic watches that use a similar mechanism to run a DC generator that keeps the battery charged.

Mechanical self winding watches have a weighted disc that is less than 1/2 of a circle. Movement of the wrist causes the weight to move around on a pivot. The weight is designed to turn one way to tighten the main spring, but it is free to rotate in the opposite direction, so it does not loosen the main spring.

Hmmmm... uncertain if youre kidding around right here or no longer... despite if it rather is self winding, you do no longer could do something different than placed on it and circulate somewhat for the period of the day. despite if it rather is manually winding, you could wind it forwards, then backwards persistently until you experience somewhat resistance in the forward wind.....

Its a small flywheel type mechanism. Basically the motive is the turning of the wrist and the force of gravity combined.
A lovely application of basic physics, and proof that the world is full of unmilked sources of free energy.
