I want to find the area under a curve described by parametric equations x = f(t) and y = g(t). I can show that the area is the integral of g(t)f'(t)dt (from t1 to t2), but does this work for a curve that fails the vertical line test? That is, can I use the formula to find the area of a circle desribed parametrically? (x=cost, y=sint) or some other function where x'(t) is not always positive? It doesn't always seem to work for me, but maybe I'm missing something.

A 2-kg block sits on an incline where the top part of the incline has a coefficient of friction of kinetic friction of 0.70. The bottom section of the plane has kinetic friction of 0.95. THe angle of inclination is 40 degrees. The block is released and travels 10 m along the initial part of the incline and then enters the lower section. Calculate how far the block travels along the second section before it is brought to a stop.

I only want to know how to do it, because i don't know how to set it up. Please help me figure this out.

Do these kinds of musuems, say the liberty science center in new jersey for example, actually encourage kids to learn more about science, or even teach kids anything? Or are they just indoor amusement parks?

Do more traditional yet dry musueams do a better or worse job of getting kids interested in science?

And if so, do you think they will like Jazz music and compete in Dino Shows (like Dogs shows ya know) ? Jurassic Park proved it, right? ANd I mention Jazz cause it's old like them. Do get me wrong, I'm not a scientist, but I know that DNA strands can be manipulated and revived if the correct sequence is attached.

Hello everybody
I was wondering how a plants roots can defy gravity, meaning disproving geotropism. Yes I know, there will be gravity pulling down the roots, but I need to find a way to make the roots defy gravity. My project ideas are to use a hydroponics set. First I would put a seed in a plastic clear container filled with water. In the middle of the container would be mesh to prevent the seed from falling to the bottom and allowing the roots to grow through the mesh. As the roots have grown a little bit, I plan to take the seed and its roots, and suspend its roots with some string and a trellis. The seed would be facing to the bottom of the container. Would this idea disprove geotropism? Your comments, remarks, retorts, and suggestions are much appreciated! =D

I am trying to understand this example my book gives of partial derivatives of functions with more than two variables.

(please note, I'm using extra parantheses for clarity)

If f(x,y,z) = (x^3)(y^2)(z^4) + 2xy + z then

1. (df/dx) = 3(x^2)(y^2)(z^4)+ 2y
2. (df/dy)= 2(x^3)y(z^4) + 2x
3. (df/dz) = 4(x^3)(y^2)(z^3) + 1

My questions:

In #1, what happened to the last z term?

In #2, again, what happened to the last z-term?

In #3, what happened to the 2xy?

It appears that I don't know some particular rule about partial derivatives, so I don't understand why these derivatives are the way they are.

Thank you SO MUCH!
