By alien, I mean an extra-terrestrial being, preferably like the cartoons depicting them as "little green men" w/weird faces & bodies. But if they had aliens, you think they'd be human enough to throw-up? (or vomit or puke or whatever ya call it wen stuffs comin outa yer stomach thru yer mouth) or do weird people not even do that cuz their stomach is differnt?

Oh sure, operationally a *real* negative number times any other *real* negative number is ALWAYS a positive number. But, if you draw a square with two numbers on a side of equal absolute value, one positive and the other negative, you will get a perfectly square graphic. It will appear in the lower left innnermost corner abutting the Cartesian Origin, yet the Math PhDs (and your grade school teacher) will tell you this figure is Not a square!

I once read that "minus numbers simply are not square" -- so I guess the *shape* of the analytic-geometry figure counts for nothing! Why not?

I keep seeing the numbers 1, 10, 11, in all forms in different sequences, whether it be in movies, licence plates, alarm clocks (if I suddenly wake up), grocery store ("miss, your change is $1.11") etc.
Universally, mathematically, spritually, scientifically...whatever it is, please someone tell me why I'm haunted by these numbers.

Native British reproduce at 1.24 kids per woman and foreigners reproduce at 4.1 kids per woman. To sustain the population both groups have to reproduce at 2.1 kids per woman. Right now native British is 90% and foreigners are 10%. How do I calculate the racial make up for the year 2106?

Since the latest research shows the Universe expanded from an infinitely small singularity to larger than the visible universe we can observe today in far less than a millisecond Everything was moving almost infinitely faster than the speed of light at the birth of the Universe, right?.

OK, I thought I was smart until my son asked me this question. I can't for the life of me remember what it is. My son asked me, "why don't we fly off the earth." All I can remember is that "the earth sucks!" Well, that gave me a few brownie points and a laugh but still I can't remember the answer. So, why does gravity pull us down and we don't fly off the earth, since the earth is a spinning ball?

Thanks

My dad read this theory in a book that I'm not so sure about.

Picture this: the sun instantly ceases to exist (I'm aware this cant happen). With it's mass gone the earth ceases to be in its orbit, and heads off on a tangent in the direction it was travelling at the moment the sun disappeared. So far, so good.

It would take eight minutes (earth being eight light minutes from the sun) for the sun's light to disappear from the perspective of earth. My dad says it would also take at least this length of time for the force of gravity to stop acting on the earth, because it too must "travel" from sun to earth, and nothing goes faster than light.

I say gravity doesnt "travel", so when the sun disappears, the earth immediately escapes orbit. Am I right?

How can we be so sure that it has no end? Infinity just does not seem like a scientific answer for a distance of area. It is so abstract. If it is infinite doesn't this mean that there are an infinite number of planets and galaxies? Wouldnt this leave an infinite amount of possibilities for atmospheres and lifeforms?

If the big bang started from one concentrated amount of matter, then the matter in space is finite. Therefore, does matter stretch out into areas of space that simply contain nothing?

sorry for all the questions. I guess the subject just really interests me.

I'm just curious as to how it is possible for so many people to continue to be religious or claim to be religious, using God or a higher power to explain every aspect of natural life. Several hundred years have passed since the world was "Enlightened", yet so many people, especially the Christian right in America, have chosen a path of darkness, only veering from it when it becomes convenient to them. Science is the answer to everything in the world, not simply some esoteric interest of a select few.

It is not possible to travel by the speed of light and it may take us several light years to reach another civilization. However, if we were to simply aquire the capability to change the dimension we are living in, we could move from one world or universe to another. Your comments please?

I know about the observed behavior that when a car battery is set on concrete for any time over about ten minutes, it is drained of all electrical charge and cannot be recharged.

What I dont know is how this works. What is the physics behind this fact?

I've heard many explanations, but I have never heard a solid ligical reason why this happens.
