When I read it in 1984 it sounded like a science fiction book- cameras everywhere (cameras were huge contraptions) and thought police. Cameras cover much of most cities now- (traffic and {security} cameras everywhere) and phone tapping/email reading by Big Brother. Do kids today think those types of intrusion are scarry or just the way things are?

US voter participation is abysmal to say the least. Should citizens be monetarily penalized if they don't vote?

Here's a proposal to get the ball rolling.

A 5% tax is levied against gross unadjusted earnings. At the polling place, a receipt with a code number is issued when you vote, which you attach to your tax return (or supply the code when you e-file). This removes the voting tax. Appropriate exemptions would of course be made for infirmity, etc.

Can we have a non-partisan debate on this, without lib/con or dem/repub slurs and invective?

People have died for our right to vote. We can honor them best by living up to our responsibility.

Comments, suggestions, objections?

The white house version says that when bush was in the classroom he was told about the second plane hitting.

In this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgFibjRFfvU , Bush talks about seeing the first plane hitting the WTC BEFORE entering the classroom.

But wait, footage of the first air plane strike didn't surface until the day after.

Research the timelines yourself...What do you make of this?

I hate to say it those who lean more toward the liberal side are more guilty of this! Just read some of the answers here, most people don't answer the question completely, but rather just make whatever statement they want. Is this the fault of our failing education system or our society in general?

Won't they try to sneak over and join the independent party, like Leiberman, if it is successful?
They just put on another stripe but it will be the same cats.

I mean I am finding it hard to see any real hard evidence by a substantial amount of the scientific community. I saw Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth." I don't know how I feel about it though. Yeah it was scary but if it's such a threat why does Gore himself have 4 giant houses and fly private planes and have 5 SUVs. Yeah I know it's the big industry that would be most responsible for the carbon dioxide emissions but. What is this really all about? Is it too evenly spread power across the globe at the expense of the U.S??
