We are managing a Hanoverian gelding with a fairly mild case of shivers. He is on high fat, low carb grain. He gets lots of exercise and pasture time. About the only time it manifests is when attempting to clean his rear hooves and shoeing. We can handle the cleaning issue, but shoeing is another matter. Would it help to ride him prior to shoeing? Do we need to resort to sedation? Also, our trainer suggested possibly not shoeing him, but he is 15 and has always had shoes, plus my daughter is planning to use him in hunter/jumper and I think he would need the shoes. Any advice?

the lady who teaches me and my cousin to ride better is.... a bit of an air head i guess.. she talks about my cousin and i to each other when we're not there.. yes, a fully grown woman. she expects us to go over there everyday every week, and she has said this, to water, clean, brush, feed, etc her horses. now i wouldnt mind doing this since i lease one, but i dont have a full lease, so really its her job. but thats not the big deal. she has me riding a 5 year old not fully broke horse who is a big brat (even though i really like him) and this is my first year riding. we have never gotten through a lesson without him acting up and she expects me to show in the fair in a few weeks. is that kind of rediculous? also she has her farrier teaching my cousin how to jump and expected her to jump at fair. um NO. should i switch next year? i REALLY like 2 of the horses there.. also i was thinking of trying english next year and she doesnt teach that.. should i switch? please help meee!!!!!!!!!!

Why do people flip out when you tell them that going barefoot is very healty and good for your horse? Its natural, we made the dang shoes! They don't want them!

I see this in Answers quite a bit about a Tri Colored Paint. I have owned Paints for over 20 years and never seen one that had three colors on it's body (but that does not mean it does not exist). Are you refering to a bay paint? Black legs, brown body, white spots, black mane and tail? Can some one please clarify this for me? Or send me a picture of one?

In a previous question, http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AhN3wXHHov1zatZnFyiNdl7ty6IX?qid=20070603092501AAeKZVi
I asked about a horse that I wanted to lease for the summer.
The lease is only $100 a month, My parents are still complaining about the cost and saying they won't pay for it even though I have offered many options to get around it.
a) I would be cleaning stalls to get the lease down to only $80 a month
b) Only for the summer months
c) I offered to sell my american girl dolls which would round up a large portion of the cost.

They still come up with more and more excuses of how its too expensive, and they won't let me sell my dolls even though all they are going to do is sit in the bottom of my closet and get lost or damaged.

Please help!

I am currently using loose ring snaffle, and it comes out of each side of his mouth by about 2cm, and sometimes more on one side. I think it is too big. he fights it even when I have loose contact. Reason??? How do you get them to accept the contact of the bit? I dont expect him to stretch down into it much yet.

Help?
:)

I bought a ticket and jumped on the West Nile ban wagon years ago whe it was in its "prime" here in Texas. I have 6 horses and I am being told by my farrier that the shot is not 100% fool proof. He says the horse can contract it even after receiving the shot?
I here alot of different stories??? What are your thoughts?

I have a 3 year old gelding thats needs breaking. We don't know where to start!

The people that we got him from say he's broke, but thats something I would have to see to believe.

The other day my step mom just layed across his back for a few seconds and he broke out with bucks. He was like nope! Not gonna happen! He went crazy!

We don't know what to do. We've never broke a horse before, our trainer says she doesn't break the babies. We can't pay somebody to come out and work with him, we have other horses to take care of too. Selling looks like our only option so far and we would hate to have to give him up.

Please! Somebody help me.

I have been taking riding lessons at a stable for 3 years now. However, lessons keep getting less and less fun. Everytime I have a problem, my trainer just tells me to do it again and then if I keep messing up she automaticly assumes I'm not listening instead of trying to help me work through it.

For example:
I was riding a horse that kept refusing, and my instructor said to use my heels more. Now I'm using my heels as much as I can and when I mess up she gets mad and says to i'm not using my heels.

Should I just get over it or is it time to change stables?

I have issues controlling my nerves when I ride, and lately I have been riding a horse that I use to be comfortable on and we did great. Now she gets nervous and so do I, and we were eliminated at the last show after only 3 jumps on cross-country because I got so nervous I froze. I know she is a good horse and would never do anything wrong, and I don't know what started my nervousness on her. My instructor suggested me going back to the push-button horse I used to ride to gain my confidence back, but I feel like this is taking a step backwards. I love the horse I ride now, and it is only on jumping that we get nervous. Should I feel embarrased about going back to an easier horse, or do you have any tips on how my horse and I can work it through together?

Ok... well when I tack up a horse, hose one down, or do somethign with a horse related to tackign up IN FRONT of someone... i don't know why but i tend to mess up. I get nervous. Once time, this ten year old girl (i was 13 or 12 at the time... now i'm 14) kept watching me... just staring. Adn i got nervous (as usual in front of ppl) and I put the girth on backwards... and i NEVER do that.. she was acting all high and mighty, and said, "Um.. you do know that that's on backwards right?" Then she gave me this look like i was the most stupid person in the world. And i did feel like the stupidest person in the world. When I tack up my horse ALONE i go at my pace and i'm not nervous at all! I do things right...

so how can i get over that feeling of getting nervous in front of ppl?? (including my trainer.. and even my mom who doesn't ride!)
thank you! (oh... and to the ppl who read my previous questions... i have decided to go back riding! thats' why i'm askign about this feeling)

Ok... well when i was nine or so... i began to ride. A year ago, is when I began to jump. I had a riding accident and became very nervous, but I still rode. I had a trainer and took lessons, so yes, i was riding a school horse, not my own horse. We couldn't, and still can't, afford a horse.
I was stuck riding this horse that i did not get along well. We just didn't mix. But i kept riding him. But things just weren't working out. So little by little, i didnt' ride as much. About a half a year ago, i stopped riding all together, I needed a Break. And now I've had my break. Now, I really want to go back. Because in the future, i'd like to become an equine vet. But now, i'm not sure anymore. I haven't been around horses in almost a full year.
So, my mom contacted a local ranch... well.. the only local ranch lol. The lessons are 65 bucks for an hour! And i'd at least have to go once a week. And we just can't afford it.So now i'm sorta lost.I really want to ride, i need to ride again, help

I have seen this over and over on here, people are so quick to judge someone else, over a simple response. Hardly enough to get a full idea of anothers knowledge or opinions. Also, to attack the asker for "asking" a question. Obviously the questions asked are for people to learn by reading the opinions and knowledge of others. Can we not just share what we know and let the asker learn and research from our responses without calling people stupid, ignorant etc. etc.?
