I ride a friends very healthy 21 year old mare about once a week. She is a lovely horse, very sweet and steady. I was just wondering what the best way to get her to pick her head up when schooling is, she tends to lean quite heavily on the bit. I would also like to be able to get her to extend her strides slightly more as she has a tendancy to be quite 'choppy' especially in trot. Any exercises or ideas would be great!

Also, how would you describe a buck, crow hop and all those kind of things to a non horsey person, in simple terms?

I am 3 months pregnant and own a 14 year old horse. Who before I became pregnant was in regular work and competing. I don't want to risk riding while i'm pregnant and would like to give him 6 months off over the summer out in our 4 acre paddock at our house with our other unbacked pony we have. Do you think giving him so much time off work at his age will be ok? I would like to bring him back into work once the baby is born and compete him again - he will be 15 then so just worried about his age? He is completely healthy in every way.

My horse is 5 years old. I don't ride her too often and she was raised in the pasture all her life, but is now in a stall with paddock. The farrier trimmed her hooves today and noticed a little bit of bruising. He said it's because she walks on the gravel. I don't walk her on the gravel a lot. Only when I go out to see her. Is it really necessary to get her shoes? I only ride her in the arena for about an hour or so every other day. And that's made of soft sand. I just don't want to be ripped off because I am on a budget, and I am a beginning horse person. Thanks.

Where exactly does the term "breaking" come from? It sounds so cruel!

I mean...theyre not small, like a parakeet, or a goldfish....do they dig a giant hole in the yard?....how can they get the body in it?...I know, seems like a dumb question, but I'm from a city, not a farm.

Who uses these and does anyone have experience with the western backed aussie saddles? I have heard they are recommended for shorter backed horses. I have a mule, so longer backed of course, but need something to pull off his shoulders, similar to an english saddle. We have shoulder issues with westerns.

I show him and can get away with a western backed aussie saddle in the shows, so would like opinions on that.

Thank you.

Is there anyone that has one, specifically a Bob Marshall? I'm not interested in Hilasons, wasn't impressed.

My question is, how exactly is the cantle designed, is it rigid and if so is it similar to the cantle of a treed saddle? I have a mule with issues of the cantles not being wide enough, plus lipomas on his back. I can ride him english just fine, but we are on his 3rd western saddle and there is NO WAY that a western saddle will fit him anymore. I just had him to the vet today and the vet agreed.

Any help on the Bob Marshall??

How much on average does it cost to board a horse? Do stables charge per week or month? What all does the boarding fee cover? Im considering buying a horse in the near future, within the next 2 years, and do not own land. Im just curious as to how much it would cost and whether it would just be better to wait a few more years until I can afford to buy land and build a little stable for myself.

I'm looking into leases and half-leases, but I'd like to know a good price for either of these from experience and details of what these prices entail in the deal so that I can formulate a good idea of what it should cost in my situation. Thanks in advance for your helpful answers!

who is in charge of setting the rules of what age a horse can race(i.e what group, association, or club, who makes the rules for racing in the U.S.?) I am trying to do a persuasive speech on horse racing and I am trying to persuade my audience that the age that a horse should begin racing should be raised to 3 or older to help reduce the likliness of a breakdown.

I was around three years old. We had 2 horses. But one of them I loved very deeply. His name was Pongo. He was an appalossa, gelding, about 8 years old.
We moved up into Wisconsin when I was around 6 and, sense we moved on a lake (you can't keep horses on a lake) we kept them at my aunts house sense they also had horses.
But just about a nine months after we moved. My cousin when to go get them a bale of hay when she noticed that Pongo had a cut on his back right ankle and it was just squirting out blood like crazy. I can still picture it...
We did EVERYTHING we could to save him. But, money doesn't grow on tree's and it was obvious that he couldn't be saved. So we had him put-down.
I loved Pongo very much and I won't forget him. He was a very nice horse too and what a baby he was. He loved to be babied.
After that, my aunt & them decided to sell their horses. That means we had to sell Taffy too. Then we found out she died 2 years ago.
I might only be 13 but i member them.

my poor pony is most of the time in her stables as we don't have the luxery to have paddocks and i can't move her to another stable as we live in a small place with only one stable yard!
so i just have to make the best of it!
i ride her every day in the afternoon as i have to work in the mornings but i find she is very cranky when i get there. i mean she is very happy to see me and waits at the front of her box when she hears me whistle but she is jsut moody.
now i think she must be bored as well and that's why she is so moody.
how can i make her "wait" in her stables during the day more enjoyable with toys etc?
i can't use treats yet as her previous owner didn't care very well for her so she used to stand weeks at a time so she is a bit on the plump side! :)
any good suggestions are welcome.
thanks!!

I really want a horse!!!!
I am jumping about 2'3. I have only been riding for 10 months. I am willing to give up everything to get a horse. I am old enough to drive so I can go to the stabes whenever I want. I am willing to go to the stables every day to ride. I don't mind doing any of the dirty work like mucking stalls. I understand that horses are a ton of work, but i am willing to do anything. Money is not the problem. The problem is my parents won't let me get a horse or even consider getting one. How can I convince them to let me get a horse? Do you think it sounds like I am ready for a horse?

We bought my 4 year old son a pony to ride (tied) behind our horses. The first day, I was putting the saddle on him and when I went to grab the straps, he swung his butt around ank kicked me. My husband came and worked with him about the area he didn't like me touching and was able to put the saddle on him. We put my boy on it and led him around. He did fine. About an hour later, we were walking though his pen and he turned around real quick and kicked my little boy in the face. My boy left the ground and did a flip. We took him to the hospital, but nothing was wrong (THANK GOD!).

Today, he says that he wants to keep the pony (we had decided to get rid of him). We told him that he can never be in the pen by himself and he agreed. I'm still soooo scared to have my boy (or even myself) around a "horse" that kicks like that.

Can anyone tell me what I can do to break the kicking?

THANKS!!!

I have a 12 y/o paint gelding. Sound, bomb proof , but I don't get to ride nearly enough. Maybe once every 2-3 weeks. I don't really want to get rid of him. What should do? I know I have heard of people leasing horses, is this an option? Could I still ride him? All he's ever done is trails, he has never shown. Whats involved in leasing? Please be specific. If you have another idea let me know! Thanks
