Where exactly does the term "breaking" come from? It sounds so cruel!

Long, long ago, they used to harass untrained, wild caught horses into exhaustion, starve them, deny them water, and use ropes and whips to repeatedly pull them to the ground.

VERY abusive.

The horses would "give up". When faced with torture, the animals would learn to quit fighting. "Breaking" them to be trained and ridden.

Nowadays, there are different methods. Some oldsters will still toss a saddle on a wild horse and ride it (bucking and screaming) until it stands still with exhaustion. (that's how Rodeo started), or they will forcefully pull them to the ground.

Some how this proves to the horse that people are "boss".

The "Horse Whisperer's" techniques have changed the way people train horses. The methods work better, and "breaking" is unnecessary. Thank goodness.

The term is used because breaking a horse WAS cruel -- still is in some places. It refers to breaking the horses spirit. Being cruel and mean and hard enough to abuse a horse until he just couldn't protest any more. Some sick people still think this is the way... Fortunately, we are learning better ways.

Its not cruel. You have to learn to RIDE one. Its just like you being Potty Trained. A horse had to be SADDLE BROKE. Just like when you Break in a car. It has to have milage on it in order to be comfortable to your standards. Correct?
