Because people are sick.
Most people don't actually SHOOT their horses (it's probably illegal) but it's SHOCKING how many horses are just THROWN AWAY.
But then, people do horrible, sick, twisted things to their CHILDREN, should we expect them to treat their animals better?
A GOOD person won't throw a horse away -- but the GOD ALMIGHTY DOLLAR can make a lot of people ... not so good.

People don't shoot their horses if they can't win a championship, they get sold to a home that is more at their level usually...When horses get put down its usually because they are dangerous, lame, unhealthy, etc. If a horse is even competing at a level where a championship is of any importance, chances are that horse has some value, why shoot a horse when you can sell it for a few thousand to someone else...

Some of them get shot because they are unusable and the owners only want the money... horses are faithfull by being used then killed. Sometimes they will sell the hide of the horse to get money from them in that way since they didn't win the championship.

It is so sick how people can do so many bad things to horses to get them to compete!!! They will drug them for speed or to calm them. Break their tales so they hang right, how does that work, a natural horse tale is not broken!?! Sweat them, make their neck sore so that they will hang it low, and more that I don't even know about. They also will start the horse before their bodies are even ready. This means that once the horses have been raced hard, by the time they are 5 they are useless, because their body is absolutely destroyed!!!!! I think it is absolutely sick and inhumane, but it seems to be accepted!!

you answered it yourself.
Horses are faithful.
Humans aren't.
Humans can shoot guns.
Horses sometimes can't live up to human expectations.
Can't say that it's the right thing to do, but there's your explanation.

Horses are sweet, but not always faithful. Secondly, owners are the same, but not always sweet, either.
