I was washing my car with my 9 year old son at a do-it-yourself carwash, and next to us was a black teen playing loud hip hop on his stereo.

Since my son was 5 years old I taught him to treat all races equally and to never use derogatory names for different races. But here was this black teen loudly playing music that constantly referred to "***@@'s", "ho's", bitches, etc.

For 5 minutes my son heard blacks calling blacks ***@@'s and ho's. So I go over to the black teen and tell him "I spent the last 4 years teaching my son not to ever use such language when referring to blacks, and in the last 5 minutes you and your music just undid all of that."

Why should my son have to treat blacks with more respect than blacks treat themselves? Why do blacks not realize they are harming the cause for equal and respectful treatment of all races when they speak of one another the way they do?

I imagine rap celebrities will not stop their sexual and racial abuse. It seems to me the nation should be outraged and boycot any artist who refers toladies as "Ho"s. BTW, if you hear the full segment, you realize that his sidekick said the H word. Imus was only agreeing with him. I think his name is Chuck or something like that. So why is it that nobody has called him on him to apologize. The answer? Current day internet, music and shows.

I believe it will. On tv tonight just about every news program is airing this rap music/Imus debate. It is really bring to the forefront how much our country is racially divided and stirring up tempers. I can see a lot of the white potential Obama supporters jumping off that bandwagon as they see how the black "leaders" in Sharpton and Jackson have taken down a (supposed) radio icon within a weeks time. It's scary to think that 2 racist black leaders have that much power. I will be interested to see if there is a dropoff in white support for Obama after this incident. What do you all think?

Of course his qoute wasnt "nice" but have you ever listened to rap? not the music the words (much worse then what Imus said) Get over it! imus was the cold front, without the heat there would be no storm!

I think he was wrong to say what he did but firing was excessive , Many people have said way much worst and just got reprimanded , One he is a shock jock that is what he does and secondly they are many many worst radio hosts out there , Howard Stern ,

This morning Oprah had the Rutgers team on due to the recent scandal with Don Imus. Later in the show she had a hip-hop dance instructor come on to teach audience members some moves. At one point Oprah made a comment about being at a party and there "always being some white guy dancing funny..."

HELLO????? She JUST had the Rutgers team on and was obviously on their side due to the racial comment made by Imus. Was Oprah not racist herself in some way???

Personally I was not offended by her comment because most white people laugh when we're made fun of for our dancing "skills" and I think most white people would laugh. But why is it ALWAYS okay for black people to say whatever about whoever, and a white person must apologize ad nauseum, have interventions, meetings, or lose their job?

Even if her comment was made in fun, it still seemed tacky. If black leaders want equality, their message of "it's okay for us but not you" is really getting old.

Thoughts?

A lightning rod event has these characteristics:

-- the intersection of two or more prominent topics (like, in the Imus event, race, public taste and the profit motive)
-- obsessive news coverage and public interest.
-- The feeling, after it's over, that some important truths have been revealed and there has been some powerful effect on society.

Other lightning rod events include the Clarence Thomas story from the early 90s and the Clinton/Monica Lewinsky affair in the late 90s.
