I'm just curious that "Is Chinese food in the Western countries expensive?" Is it like the Japanese food or Italian food that we eat here in Asia that are more expensive and we don't eat it regularly? Is it like a treat for something special or you could eat it everyday? Here, we could get any food even less than a dollar!!! Not sweets, of course..

My daughter has been out of school for a few weeks due to a an accident. (She's fine now). Her friend made her a care baggie because she missed the Chinese New Year celebration. Inside were different candies.

Two of them we can't figure out what they were but they were very tasty. One was a rust color and had a couple of holes going through it. It was oval shaped and had a taste between a potato and a piece of coconut. The second had a similar taste but it was coated in powdered sugar and was long and slender and white. There were also small off white balls with the same taste as well.

The teacher said it was Lotus but when we went to chinatown here in Oakland to buy some, the taste was horrible. Yes it was covered in what we thought was powdered sugar but ...Yuck!!!

I know we should ask the classmate but she is out of town for an early Spring Break, so does anyone out there know what it is and if you live in the SF/Bay Area could you tell us where to buy some??? Thanks!

Everytime I go out for Chinese, I order a combo meal with Pork Fried Rice, Chow Mein, Fried Shrimp, either BBQ pork or Sweet and Sour Chicken. The meals always come with Egg Flower Soup. I love BBQ Pork and the Egg Flower Soup, but I no longer like the other items I mentioned above. I really don't like Egg Rolls either. I order these combo meals because they sound good in my head, but I'm always let down when it arrives. What are your favorite chinese dishes? What makes your favorite dish special?

Hey guys and girls, how are you all?

Tomorrow me and family are sitting down to a new movie, and we want CHINESE FOOD! lol. So, we're pretty new to this whole game so we need advice on what tastes best! We've had the basics like rice and chow mein but other than that we're virgins to the more, shall we say, vibrant side of the menu.

So what do you guys recommend? Describe the tastes, the pleasures, the absorbing qualities you get from eating such fantastic meals.

(And finally, what the hell are the point in prawn crackers? They don't taste like anything!?)

Thanks.

I've seen kosher dills, kosher salt, kosher meat, kosher gelating. What in the world does Kosher mean? I know it's related to Jewish people but i dont exactly know why they always have that label on certain foods.

I recently went to a "party" thrown by some students at my university, and everyone was asked to bring a foreign dish. Someone brought something that was yougurt with chunks of cucumber in it.

Does anyone know what this dish is called, where it comes from, and how it should be served?

My mother, who has since passed, used a trick to be certain the corned beef turned out tender. She made corned beef for about 500 people (no joke) and it was the best!! I would like to continue on the tradition, but have failed in the 6 years since her death. I think it was ground mustard? Any help is appreciated.
