I think the benefit of a local economy now is the use of less fossil fuels. If we change over completely to sustainable fuels, would the world or its local communities benefit from local economies, more than if we continue our large scale international trade? Detailed answers appreciated.

I think more companies need to be environmentally responsible. Reducing waste, offering recycling opportunities, using less energy, creating less polution. I would like to support the companies that go the extra mile. What environmentally friendly companies do you like, and what do they do to help?

How long will it take before the cars are affordable for most people? I just bought a car for almost $11K and it was a little more than I wanted to pay. The "green" cars seem to be in the $20's usually. I can't do it. I know you get a big tax break for it, but I can't wait til then for the money.

I live in the mountains and drive on dirt roads. I need a vehicle with good ground clearance and either all wheel drive or four wheel drive. Everything out there seems to be a gas guzzler. Any suggestions.

Is there another practical means to generate the world's power needs? Fossil fuel based power must be worse, since it has immediate greenhouse gas impacts, and the total volume of the world's nuclear waste wouldn't fill a soccer stadium. If run properly, do nuclear plants impact the environment?

I have loads and loads of plastic bags that I have gathered over the years from clothes shopping and I don't want to just turf them in the bin. I want to know if there are places or services that can recycle plastic bags.

Thanks

All of a sudden when things get bad people want to jump in but why have people not been doing this for hundreds of years now to protect our resources? Al Gore makes a video and people want to actually do something NOW. Seems to me that it is just like Sept. 11th, people cared right after it happened but now they care less. Is that how people will act a few years from now about "becoming greener?"

I don't live in my own home. I actually live with family. They have the weather stripping, insulted hot water heater, etc. But I'm wondering about things I can do without changing the household that is not mine anyway. Don't say to go buy a hybrid vehicle, I don't have the money to and unless you want to pay for it then I'm keeping my Ford truck AKA gas guzzler.

As i understand the concept, you need to live in an isolated area, and be using wind and solar energy generating things/panels, etc.... What else? I guess you don't have to be isolated to use solar energy tho....

Like batteries, used CFLs need to be disposed at a toxic waste depot rather than tossed out with the ordinary household trash. Because mercury is cumulative, this poisonous element would add up if all spent bulbs went into a land fill."

This thought has been in my mind for many years, and now that all of us humans have come to know the different ways of destruction, that have been produced by man for his lust for power of whatever type, all of us should be asking this question to our selves!
