And rampant commercialization ALWAYS makes that holiday more meaningful...

Unbridled consumerism is a leading cause of environmental problems - I hate to rain on your parade, but commercialization is the opposite of what Earth Day needs.

To answer your question, yes! What do those three holidays have in common? In a traditionalized manner someone gets something free out of it. Also, so many people celebrate these days and prepare for it. Preparing is what makes it fun. You get the masses involved by tricking them into thinking these holidays are fun and that after all their efforts they get something back in the end. First thing we would have to do is make Earth day popular. We should target the young the old the parents the teachers... everyone that might care, needs the volunteer hours, wants something out of it, etc. People are lazy so find easy ways for others to contribute on earth day. Some people, especially younger people, respond to others that they admire like celebrities. There are so many ways to get others involved. Very rarely do things pick up over night... we just have to keep working hard and be patient.

Earth Day doesn't have to be commercialized to be a success in securing a healthy environment for the future generations. People all over the world need to be informed and educated about what is happening to the earth that we live on. We can't completely STOP global warming but we can reduce the effect that is happening to the earth now. One of the ways for YOU to take a stand and do your part in reducing the effect of global warming is change your incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the word is out about Earth Day. It's a well-known observance now.

But it's sitll up to people how they wish to celebrate it, or if they wish to celebrate it at all.

Just keep doing what you're doing. Wear a t-shirt, get some people together for a clean-up, etc. and you will be honoring Earth Day and giving others a model to follow.

The other Holidays need more Earth Day in them!

Lets change them from commercial events, and bring them back into the community.

Make our own candy and ornaments, stop buying plastic Santas and JackoLanterns from China.

3DM is correct. Earth day should be kept secret or some one might use a resource or something like that.
