If you switch to natural gas would will eliminate the need to get the bottles refilled meaning driving and using gas. You will also have to spend a few $ to get the orifices changed because they are a different size than the ones for Propane. However they might have come with your grill.

I use gas for cooking but here in New Zealand we use LPG which is a mixture of propane and butane. Propane here is used more in the engineering field for cutting steel much as the same as oxy-acetylene plant. Personally I would stick to the bottle because at least you know you have a supply. No guarantee of supply on a pipe line. If you have a clean blue flame on your griller it shouldn't make any difference to the environment which one you use. Any yellow in the flame means not enough air mixed with the gas. I have a standby bottle so if one runs out I can fill it when next I'm in town, not having to make a special trip.

In the long run, there is little difference between natural gas and propane usage. But, if you had to pick one, natural gas would probably be better than propane because it is lighter and would therefore reduce your emissions.

Also, you would have less waste (though the tanks are reclaimed) as you would not have to drive to/from the propane fill site.

Your consumption of one means production thus consumption of the other.

Propane is a byproduct of the natural gas refining process.

They're going to refine X amount of natural gas and Y amount of propane. And to the extend we don't use propane for heat and appliances its price drops and it is used more by the chemical companies as a feedstock.

This is one where whatever the answer is on a direct level, once you factor in the indirect it all washes out.

Propane is convenient but a griddle that runs on your gasline would be a lot cheaper for you once it's installed. you could then apply the savings to other green projects in your home. And it burns as clean as propane.

To be honest - I like the Natural gas.....I have noticed the food that is grilled tastes a little different....and I haven't noticed a difference in consumption being any different....
