All of a sudden when things get bad people want to jump in but why have people not been doing this for hundreds of years now to protect our resources? Al Gore makes a video and people want to actually do something NOW. Seems to me that it is just like Sept. 11th, people cared right after it happened but now they care less. Is that how people will act a few years from now about "becoming greener?"

I think it is a "fad" just as the word "emo" has been thrown everywhere and people claim they are all "emo" now. This will wear off and some people will not give a crap anymore then there are those that are truly dedicated who will continue to try to save the world.

You must be young, because it has alreadt happened. In the 80's it was all the rage to recycle, and use cloth shopping bags. After a while people seemed to go right back to the easier ways. Face it, human nature is geared to convienence. I think people are starting to see with the changes in weather that something needs to be done. I know there is a debate about if Global Warming really is the cause or exists at all. At least it is getting some people to think and act green. A lot starts with a little. Do your part as an individual. Take opportunities to show others how to act green. Every little bit will help. It is frustrating.

Here's my perspective on the whole issue of Global Warming being real or fake:

a) It could be fake. We could be getting all hyped up about preserving the natural balances that exist in our world because we think we might have done something to screw it all up. Then, centuries later, we find out it was all a hoax or false conclusion. We move on with our lives, and make the world a little prettier and healthier while we're at it.

b) It could be real. We could be facing the end of the current state of the world, or at worst, the total end of an environment we can survive in.

I personally see no harm in preserving the planet. I take no side to global warming and don't push people to. I believe that it's just logical to preserve what we have and keep our home healthy.

All of a sudden, we've been able to monitor these things. How in the world would you be able to monitor carbon dioxide levels in 1940? With a satellite? Oh, wait, that was the late 50s early 60s. How about the use of GC/MS? Oh, that was the 1980s (by the way, that's gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy which is used to analyze the composition of a given sample). People are jumping on the band wagon because we now have the ability to monitor these things, and the power to foresee what we are doing. This is the right time do something. Now is a great time. Taking steps to prevent cancer is way better than waiting for it to happen, then trying to fight it. Give the earth cancer and we've got nowhere to run. The 'green fight' will never end. Do you want waste dumped in your drinking water? Do you want the coral reefs to die off (which they are doing right now)? Do you know what a lack of diversity does? And I'm not talking ethnic or racial diversity. Without species diversity, it becomes easier for population specific diseases to wipe out entire populations (plants and animals). We need plants to make medicines. We need the oceans to remain salty and pure to maintain our moderate climate. We need low levels of air pollutants, as our lungs are some of the most sensitive tissue in our bodies. Life is not a fad.

No one cares as much about September 11th because our government is screwing up left and right. When you have a war, you don't go in there and say, OK, we'll only get the people dressed in uniforms, and if a soldier screws up, he'll go to jail. That is not war. The TRUTH, which I feel everyone is afraid of, is the war is death. War is murder. War is killing. War is torture. War is hell on earth. Soldiers will screw up, but I guarantee that they are trying their best to kill those who need to be killed and spare the innocent. I put my faith in them, but not many other people do.

Someday our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will thank us for continuing this 'fad'.
Or, someday they will ask, "WHY, Grandma and Grandpa, didn't you try to do something to protect and preserve the delicate ecological balance between all men, plants and animals so necessary for our survival on Earth? Didn't you care, or was it just a 'fad'? Why did you KNOW about it and not do anything about it?" -RKO- 06/06/07

Yes its a fad.

And yes people will get bored with it.

The only way to have a lasting effect is to make the practice which are environmentally sound:
1) Cheaper than the polluting practices
AND
2) More convenient than the polluting practices.

As for energy savings... that always saves money... and people will try to save money, so as long as its more convenient, people will save energy.

Most people tend to be reactive and not proactive. People don't want to fix something until they find out that it has effectted them personnally.
