Is this even a possibility. I know some people say that other species will fill a gap, but is it possible to create too many gaps and/or gaps that are too big to fill?

making a printout of an e-book or pages from a large (say 20 or more) online article? As I get older, I feel more inclined to want to help out the environment as much as I can, and this thought popped in my head the other day. Would I be accelerating the number of trees being cut down by purchasing books or rather making printouts of them from my PC? Thanks.

Congressional negotiators reached a deal late Friday on energy legislation that would force American automakers to improve the fuel efficiency of their cars and light trucks by 40 percent by 2020.

The proposal, which would require automakers to achieve 35 miles per gallon on average, is similar to a measure that was passed in the summer by the Senate but was bitterly opposed by the auto companies.

The compromise should ensure passage in the House, although the Senate may insist on changes. It does not appear to include provisions, like $16 billion in new taxes on the oil industry, that drew a veto threat from President Bush.

even if they meet the law’s mandate, the fuel efficiency of the American car fleet will still lag far behind that of other major industrialized countries.

European auto companies, for example, must average 40 mpg and China requires a 35 mpg standard.

What do you think of these new standards?

With all the international bickering going on, it occured to me that its the holidays that we americans waste the most. If we weren't so flagarant with all the holiday lights, both individually (with our home lawn displays) & commercially (the displays around retailers & community centers.

Wouldn't we make at least a dent in the amount of wasted electricity we use this holiday season?

Displays don't have to waste electricity, just those with little creativity or lacking in common environmental sense.
Its bad enough I have to pay $4 a gallon for my honda.

Will you email your city council person & your senators to do something to cut the waste in this country this holiday season?

Does this right to live include things that may kill us? Smallpox for example. Do the animals or insects that carry disease have a right to live? What about Malaria?

Who decides?

I have heard people talking about this, and I was wondering why everyones theorys were on this?

I also read this on a website.....
"Devastating earthquakes. Record-breaking tsunamis. Category 5 hurricanes. Spiking global temperatures. World war. Predictions of how it will all end have been around for thousands of years. In Apocalypse 2012, Lawrence E. Joseph reveals the curious fact that 2012 has been pinpointed as a pivotal, perhaps cataclysmic, year in human history by ancient sources and contemporary science alike."

"And on the tip of South Africa, he interviews physicists and psychics who are trying to make sense of the fact that the earth’s magnetic field is vanishing."

"Joseph concludes that we are in a race against time. Apocalypse 2012 is an authoritative and deeply unsettling appraisal of just how close the earth, or at least our species, might be to extinction."

Starting next week, all Swedes hoping to get a new driving license (a more intensive and expensive process than in the U.S.) will need to have learned how to "eco-drive." The principles of eco-driving are here.

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2005/10/eco-driving_goi.php

The Swedish Road Administration (SRA) says too many drivers - half of taxi and bus drivers and two-thirds of truck drivers - regularly speed, using up fuel and spurting out carbon dioxide unnecessarily. SRA makes the bold claim that 220,000 tons of CO2 could be saved annually if drivers obeyed the speed limit.

Drivers can expect to save between 4 to 10 percent on gas usage..by sudden speed-ups and slow-downs, never pressing more than halfway on the gas pedal, switching to higher gears fairly quickly, and maintaining the speed limit.

http://www.treehugger.com/files/2007/11/a_license_to_ec.php#ch02

What do you think of this new requirement for Swedes to be able to get drivers licenses?

someone needs to explain to me how "green" it is for me to turn in my full size car , to be chopped up, then put on a boat for china, then be melted down, then made into auto parts, sent to korea or japan, then put back on a boat, so I can buy a car that can get 28 mpg instead of the 18 mpg I am getting....?

to conserve by increasing employee telecommuting.? Isn't it a scandal that this Pres can't bring himself to do the right thing and put OPEC on notice. If Carter were President he would be on it immediately rather than coast to the end of their term. I guess invading Iran or Venezuela makes better sense?
BTW, it would also lower CO2 emissions and begin working to reverse GW. Lower particulate pollution too. I guess it only makes sense to little naive me and none to all the politicians who need campaign contributions from the fat and happy oil industry.

I was thinking about all the paper everyone uses a day, then I wondered how there are so many trees to make all that paper. The average American uses about 2,000,000,000 trees per year. What if everyone had their own laptop, and you wrote everything down on it instead of wasting away trees. I'm not a tree hugger, but we use so much paper a day. Read this here too http://members.aol.com/ramola15/funfacts.html.

This is an outrage and disgrace and I cannot understand if the population of humpback whales is recovering, why would there now be a "scientific whale hunt" to once again jeopardize the population!
It amazes me as to the brutality of these Japanese whalers, and how sad it is that people continue their cruelty to these beautiful creatures.
There is no need for the Japanese to hunt whales. Starvation or ancient native sustenance are not issues.
If the Japanese claim tradition, then they should whale from traditional vessels and row or sail their butts out into the ocean.
Whales are higher mammals that deserve the respect of humans as beings in their own right.

Sorry I do not usually rant on like this and I am not a greenpeace tree hugging soul, but it just makes my blood boil when they say it is for scientific reasons and the real reason is they want to carry on a tradition that was stopped nearly 40 years ago.
If you feel as strong as I do about it then I suggest you boycott all Japanese trade goods and make it known that that you are doing this and the reasons why.
