Starting next week, all Swedes hoping to get a new driving license (a more intensive and expensive process than in the U.S.) will need to have learned how to "eco-drive." The principles of eco-driving are here.

The Swedish Road Administration (SRA) says too many drivers - half of taxi and bus drivers and two-thirds of truck drivers - regularly speed, using up fuel and spurting out carbon dioxide unnecessarily. SRA makes the bold claim that 220,000 tons of CO2 could be saved annually if drivers obeyed the speed limit.

Drivers can expect to save between 4 to 10 percent on gas usage..by sudden speed-ups and slow-downs, never pressing more than halfway on the gas pedal, switching to higher gears fairly quickly, and maintaining the speed limit.

What do you think of this new requirement for Swedes to be able to get drivers licenses?

I think it's a very positive move - saving fuel is something everyone should be concerned with, plus it helps the environment.

Apparently, Sweden is trying and that's good. Glad to see someone is.
In response to 'Dr,' Jello-There isn't a way to monitor how far a driving pedal is pushed but when some people get information like that, they try to change their behavior. Not everyone wants to be a jack-a$$ about it. Besides, if a person is speeding and has to stop suddenly, it's obvious at that point that their brake pedal went down more than half-way.

The "Doctor" chews his foot again!

There is a way to monitor how people drive in case you didn't know; your car's computer records at least three seconds of everything you do and can be used in court like an airplane flight recorder to convict you. All it takes is a compression algorithm and increased memory to record more.

I think this is great! I am patenting a product based around exactly that principal (hypermiling) and I now know I have a market waiting in Sweden.

What took the Swedes this long? I would think every driver already knows this. A good thing for those new drivers though.

In the 70's,during the oil crisis, the U.S. reduced the speed limit to conserve fuel.
The benefits are also less accidents, lower insurance rates.
So what's the harm?

How would they ever prove that anyone is doing these actions?

Is the gvmt going to monitor how far people depress the gas pedal?

Don't you think that this is just feel good legislation that will accomplish absolutely nothing?

"Eco" mannerism can potentially be applied to all facets of life.

I'm calling slippery slope. Is this really where we want to go?
