making a printout of an e-book or pages from a large (say 20 or more) online article? As I get older, I feel more inclined to want to help out the environment as much as I can, and this thought popped in my head the other day. Would I be accelerating the number of trees being cut down by purchasing books or rather making printouts of them from my PC? Thanks.

Most books thease days are printed on recycled paper so as long as you recycle them when you are done, they're the best choice. Plus you get unlimited use until the book wears out.

As long as your recycle them when you're done with them, it probably wouldn't matter too much. If you're not recycling paper products, then they can't be used again and for sure more trees will need to be cut down. They'll also end up in a landfill, which is not great for the environment either.

E-book - print out only what you need on recycled paper and recycle it when you are finished.
You can even flip over the page and print on the opposite side of a one-sided document from your recycle bin. (hint - just put a line through the page you are not using, if they are similar.
I love to cut and paste - I tend to narrow down to exactly what I need and it makes for easier referencing also.

With books you can not select them that are only printed on recycled paper(some places do recycle them). But you can buy and recycle printer paper.
