I found it on HBO and have been meaning to watch it since it's supposed to be such a good movie, but it's 20 minutes into it. Right now they're sitting around a campfire talking about their lives and stuff... can anybody tell me what happens in the first 20 minutes?

So in the commercial for it, the guy says "I'm John Rider, and I need a ride" or something very similiar to that.

Isn't it a bit unoriginal to do a movie about someone named John RIDER to need a RIDE? I mean, as far as last names go, there could have been a bit more creativity, lol. Right?

My husband and I have 5 or 6 movies we quote from often, most of which we don't even have to explain because others are familiar with the quotes and the movies they came from.

What moviies do you quote from?

They also played it at one point during a Nip/Tuck scene in Season 3. I dotn remember when but it seems at a scene with the carver or the police detective and Dr. Troy. I love this song!

I've seen the movie and I've read the book. Personally, I'm glad I saw it before I read it, but I like both very much.

You are left to wonder about them after the movie, but then again, although the book explains them well, you are then left asking the same thing about the makers of the monoliths - still left with questions - I like that.

I do like the fact that in the book, the TMA-0 (Africa monolith) is actually transparent rather than ebony, if memory serves. Makes me think of all the little monoliths that serve as Hal's components in the movie. I wonder if the proportions of Hal's chips are 1x4x9?

Anyway...

If you have seen the movie - what's your take on the monoliths?
If you have read the book - what's your take on the monoliths?
If you have done both - what's your take on the monoliths?
If you have done both - which do you prefer? book or film?
