Those are high end 'Toy Soldiers' and can be had in almost any configuration imaginable. Want to recreate a Napoleonic scene? It's covered. Perhaps an authentic Japanese village in the midst of a battle between Samurai is more to your liking. Yup, even the peasants can be had for a price.

These are the sort of expensive toys collected by those with the means to afford such luxuries as these little fellows are anything but cheap. Most are cast from metal, lead and tin being the most prevalent in antique types though today I believe it is 'white' or 'pot' metal that is used.

The history of toy soldiers go back hundreds of years and continues even today in the more generic plastic soldiers which can be found in almost any convenience or grocery store but they are a far cry from the ones we're discussing. No, these little beauties are actually miniature sculptures, cast individually in highly detailed molds, then hand painted in exquisite detail and sold both individually as well as in sets.

I'll not go into price, suffice to say you could easily buy a new car for the price of one battle scene done to completion. This consists of a full miniature landscape, a topographical recreation done in exact detail, every subtle nuance recreated to the finest degree. Yes, these hobbiests can be considered a bit anal but it's this very attention to detail which draws them to the task and has for countless generations.

Well, I hope that clears things up for you. Oh, and in case you're wondering the answer is no, I don't collect these guys but I do admire the craftsmanship involved in their making and utilization by such dedicated hobbiests. Good luck and have a great day.
