Just wondering if I should be teaching my children to do so because despite the FACT that homeschoolers are proven to test at or above peer level and despite the fact that they socialize just fine and despite the fact that homeschoolers whether taught w/or by a non-college educated parent and test just as high...the public school advocates continually say throughout their posts here at YA opinions based not on facts but on broad generalizations.

Is that part of the public school experience? Should I make sure to teach my children to ignore the facts and give their opinions as if they are the truth?

Just curious.

P.S I'm not bitter and of course I would never teach my children such ignorance. ;-)

If you do, do you like it? What grade level are you doing? I'm doing the one for students who are going to do the "G.C.E. 'O'" level examination next year. (8th grade). I've heard many people say it is the hardest curriculum in the world. Is that true? It sure feels like it.

What are the benefits of Home Schooling? I am in Australia and they dont have it here unless its for a reason, illness, disability etc etc.
I would think that going to a school would be of more benefit to the child, to be educated by professional educaters, and for social skills.
I know just in general, in my own life that I wouldnt have time to do it properly, with all the other day to day things that go on.
Just asking for opinions, as I know nothing about it?

Since we in the homeschooling community do not live in the 'real world' I was curious how others spent their day in the 'fake world'

This morning we woke up and I made the kids some egg sandwhiches. Then they watched tv for about 30 minutes. After that we took off to a beautiful park for a few hours to take a hike and have a nature study. We sat and observed a spittle bug, we observed how it made the spit from the rear, it was cool. However, apparently it is only a 'real world' experience if you are in a little room at a little desk reading about it from a text in which facts to be learned were written by someone older than them who OBSERVED the facts. We then discovered a Praying Mantis and observed how it cleaned itself, how it walked, discussed its compound eyes...but again, since the kids weren't at a desk it wasn't real, oh that and no one was distracting us from the lesson.

We came home and did book work for a couple of hours and swam and went to a resturaunt for dinner

Ok, this relates to an answer on another question (you remember the one by the girl that doesn't like homeschooling?)
Anyway, one answerer said he would have more faith in homeschooling when we have a president that has been homeschooled.
I gave a list (no peeking) but a lot of people do not go back in to re-read answers (ok, ok, there's nothing on TV, LOL)
So, can you do it? Can you give this guy a list of homeschooled presidents to help him understand that homeschooled kids grow up to do great things?
I see this as an open door to increase understanding, not to mention a chance to have a little fun and play a little trivial pursuit! :)

We've been homeschooling now for three years. My daughter knows the schedule and what her work load is going to be. She is involved with other homeschoolers, as well as with her neighborhood friends. But recently she has been extremely resistant to doing the work. She argues with me, sits there and doodles rather then work and then, when she gets extra work or it takes time away from the "fun" stuff, she is furious. I know it comes with the adolescent territory, but I could use some advice on how I can keep my cool as well as my desire to teach at home!

After being floored by this comment made by douglas z in another question, I can't help but laugh now:

" I suspect... RELATIVELY no social life with others their age.

H/S parents claim the opposite. "

I mean, really. Are we homeschooling parents really seen as conniving, devious, sinister people who are trying to make things seem better than they are? Do we hate our children so much that we would lie to the world about what they are doing and purposefully ruin their lives?

"Perhaps you can tell us. I put the question on here two weeks ago, and I got a lot of defensive, nasty, stuck-up people who home school their kids telling how stupid I was."

Haha, that is too funny given the comments douglas z makes about homeschooling every chance he gets. Besides, I just checked out the question he mentioned. Most of the answers were completely honest and non-judgmental towards him.

In Germany it is forbidden to "homeschool". Is this against basic human and parental rights?

my little sister is being homeschooled just because she got picked on in school for a couple days, me ,...I'm 19, I got picked on all the way through school for being poor and they never homeschooled me, and i was molested. My sister now is a spoiled little brat, she bosses my parents around, and everytime I come to the house she is playing playstation, she doesnt do much school at all, I have first hand expirience and I DO NOT like homeschooling. How does a child learn reality if you shelter them from it. You build personality in school, if you shelter them forever, when they finally leave the nest, they will be clueless and make so many mistakes it will dumbfound you.

That question was asked by kehkohjones in my stats thread and the missing part was "as trained professionals."

My answer: Sorry to have to inform you of yet another positive statistic but. One does not need to be a trained professional in order to home educate their children. Studies show virtually no difference in the success of home educated students nor how well they test despite whether or not their parents have been professionally trained to teach or college educated.

Source http://epaa.asu.edu/epaa/v7n8/ - there are other studies but you'll get the same thing and this one was very thorough.

On the other hand and strangely enough, in this same study it was found that public schooled children have better success in public schools if their parents do have a degree. Probably because those the highschool graduate parents are under the misconception that children need constant 'teaching' to learn and that teachers are the only ones who can possibly teach, it simply is not true

Some kids hate being homeschooled but the same goes for those in the public schooled system as well. "But they don't have anyone." Well, neither do some public schooled children. Many of them have it worse by being bullied or not performing up to the school standards, etc. Do you not see your hypocrisy? Its 'okay' for kids to hate school to be FORCED to go, who don't have friends, are picked on, perform below standards but when some homeschooled kids say they hate being homeschooled you automatically pull the socialization card.

Many people LOVE public school and all the activities, but so do many homeschoolers.

To me, you naysayers are a bunch of good little parrots (which isn't surprising)that accept the authorities OPINIONS as facts, without first having looked into things for yourself before spouting off the same inaccurate and unintelligent drivel.

Stats show that homeschooled kids do fine academically despite whether or not their parents have a college education.

I have been looking for one and have found that there are organizations for African-Americans and Jews but none for Hispanics.

The stats say that the homeschooling rate for Hispanics homeschooling is less than 1% of the total homeschooling population, which should make it about 200,000 or so. But 200,000 or so people is significant I think.
