I believe every state has a on line school program..you need to get in contacted with the public school there and find out if they recommend a on line school..you need to find one in your state for the best education..I live in Ohio and we have alot of online schools here founded by the state..free computer, free internet, free school supplys, free school books, my son is enrolled in a online school that still has class field trips, teacher meetings,,everything that a public school has ..i found this school through my sons doctor and the public school highly recommended it..so dont just put your child in the first online school you come across..

You don't necessarily need an on-line school but you should check in your state to find out the requirements of homeschooling (some are more stringent than others) --

The Alternative Education Resource Organization is a wonderful place to get books, information on alternative educational choices, including homeschooling.

Pat Farenga has a lot of resources, and gives seminars on unschooling and homeschooling -- a list of his current engagements is listed in the link.

I also am providing an information page to get you started.

I used to be a teacher, and am now a technical writer. I left for a variety of reasons (mainly because of highstakes testing). It is my belief that children are not all the same in the way they learn and process information, and most of our school situations still do this. Depending on where you are located there could be several alternatives to a traditional schol out there if you don't have the time or resources to homeschool.

We home school our six year old first grader but we don't use an online based curricula. I've heard great things about Time for Learning's online curriculum, http://www.time4learning.com

You may also check with your local school system as I know ours offers an online home study program that is optional. However when you participate in a school board sponsored program they still dictate what your child does and does not learn. The schools receive money for each child enrolled so when more and more children are home schooled they offer these home study programs as way to get back control of that child as well the funding from the state.

Here is a link to Florida's virtual academy, http://www.flva.org/dg/dg_fl.html?se=Google&campaign=K12_FL_VA_Local_Job_569&adgroup=K12_FL&kw=home_school. I'm not sure what state you are in but home school laws do vary from state to state on what is required of you as the parent and of your child so it's best to look at state specific resources if possible.

Another great resource is the Home School Legal Defense Association at http://www.hslda.org

By definition, a home school is done at home by the parent. I think what you are looking for is a home school curriculum, and you would like to see online courses offered.

I would suggest Calvert Schools out of Maryland. I used them from 5 grade through high school, and the education was probably as good or better than my parents had the time to do on their own.

Good luck

You might check out www.k12.com. They have a great curriculum which you keep track of online. Some of the work is done online and some in the provided books and materials. They also have virtual schools in many states - you can look yours up on their site - where you can be provided with a computer, the curriculum, and a teacher for free if you'd like.

Of course I know plenty. LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District ) offers lots of referrals through the BEYOND THE BELL program. They go in depth of the different providers and such. Contact them and I am sure they can forward a listing.

Search Gateway Christian School on Yahoo!. I can't remember the web address, but that should pull it up. Give them a call!

I sure hope you don't go ahead with this. Second graders are better off in school.
