My wife is a mathematics teacher at our local high school. She teaches Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. In addition to teaching high schoolers, she and I sometimes have "class" together at home where she teaches me some of the concepts of high school math; I've always had a fascination with algebra and wanted to catch up on it. We try to make it into a classroom setting, where she occasionally tests me and assigns me homework - the one downside of your wife teaching you :)

I want to know if any other teachers out there also teach their spouse at home. In my opinion, I like being taught and I'm learning a lot about algebra that they never taught when I was in school.

I really want to go to Columbia for college, I've checked out their website and stuff like that, but I was wondering if anybody here had actually gone to school there, and what you thought of it, and how hard you worked in high school to get in. Thanks!

DO you have any good sites for pretty good detailed summaries? For example I type in a book and it gives me all the info about it in a nice detailed summary... I tried sparknotes.com and it sucks... HELP!

I went back to college exactly 10 years after I was supposed to (I was 27 instead of 18). After two good years at a community college, I got into a bunch of good schools (although I didn't aim at the TOP ones) and settled at a private research university in Massachusetts which still appears in US News' top 100. Now that I'm fairly close to graduation, I'm wandering what does it take to get into, let's say, Yale's film studies PhD program or another strictly academic, not money-making, PhD program.

Does the same rules that apply for undergrads apply here? I'm not talking about law or economics, I'm thinking about rhetoric / American studies or film studies. What do they look for? I've been doing all sorts of things related to cinema and subcultures in general. What should I be sure to have before applying?
