Education & Reference - 10 December 2006

I have to do a science fair project for school . I already know what I want to do .My project is rock salt & ice & how the salt lowers the freezing point & I was gonna even add how the rock salt works when you make homemade ice cream too.My teacher is making us fill out this paper with a bunch of questions on it . I can figure out how to write every one except two of which are pretty simple questions.(questions may sound odd but we have to use the scientific method)

In italian for some verbs like "piacere", "servire", etc we must check them with the subject and then if the subject is singular we use the verb in singular(3th person) and if it was plural we must have the verb in plural form(3th person). Like bellow.

Mi piace il libro! (I like the book)
Mi piacciono i libri (I like the books)

But in one case it doesn't act like this!

When we have the word "Un Paio" as a subject! although it seems to be singular (It means a pair of), in fact it's plural. because we use plural form of the verb for it!

Mi SERVE un paio di scarpe. [WRONG]
this must be >>> Mi SERVONO un paio di scarpe.
(It means i need a pair of shoes.)

What do u think? what can be the reason ???

I am currently working on my masters in English at St. Mary's University in TX. This is not a huge school and the English masters program is fairly new. I am doing very well though (hopefully I'll graduate with at least a 3.8). With that said, can someone help me choose a PhD program for English?
I want to attend a school that has a better reputation (although I doubt I'll get into harvard, for example) so that I will have less trouble finding a job after I am done. Also, I know a lot of universities pay for school and sometimes will give you a stipend to live on as well (like Rice University in houston, TX). I like that idea quite a bit (I'm strapped for cash) and would REALLY like to attend a school like that if they have a good repuation.
