Is Kakuro out there and popular yet?

my niece came over today and she had this book order thing from her school and it had this thing called Kakuro. They say it's supose to be somewhat like sudoku... i just wanted to know if it's actually known yet.

I know for sure that sudoku id VERY popular all over the world, but the way I just love it, but unfortunately, I've never heard anything about the Kakuro...
