You simplify to the point where you own next to nothing
We have far more examples of materialism in the U.S..than the other but you can look out of country...Mother Teresa, Ghandi,etc.......

How about ascetiscism? From wikipedia..."a life characterized by a life of abstinence from worldly pleasures". Or perhaps that's the opposite of hedonism?

Possibly minimalism. When we were younger we were much more materialistic, thinking we needed to acquire a lot of "stuff". now that we are older, we realize that "stuff" often just complicates your life and we are much more minimalist - we prefer to have as little "stuff" as possible and are trying to get rid of "stuff".
