Well, not sure if this answer is the entire meaning of what love is, but it is MY description or meaning of what I believe love is.
Love, is a word used to express a feeling that two people have for each other. But, love, can be felt for cats or dogs as well. I have heard the word "love" used for inanimate objects as well. Such as, "I love my computer" or "I love my car" etc. etc. To me, it has looked like that as the years have gone by, the word love has been overused, and most of the time looses it's meaning. I think when people use the word love, they are saying that they are attached, whether it be a person, animal, and/or object, it's true, original meaning has been lost.
Sort of like when you tell your dad or mom that you love them, it's a different kind of love then when you tell your spouse.
Do some searches on the net for "love" as well, to see if that helps you find anything more.

"What is love?" is a question only one in love can answer. I believe that as every person is different, every love is.
For your essay, if you've ever been in love, write about that. About the feelings, the person, the emotion, the situation, the meaningless details that draw the big picture. If you haven't been in love let your mom do it. :P either way, gl in it.

thats a rather opinionated essay, but ill give u my defenition, love is something that one living thing to another. that may not be very helpful but stretch it out with examples or something. good luck
