I have a story to write and I planned for it to begin like - beep, beep or however the phone sounds when you call a person and are waiting for the phone to be picked up. What should I write there? Peep, peep, ring ring, or what?

Imagine a classroom environment:
Now one says,
"Stephen is standing outside the class as he didnot bring the leave letter for his yesterday's absence"

The situation is that Stephen (for example only) was absent for the class yesterday & he is standing outside the classroom because he didnot bring the leave letter.

Now is that sentence right? is the usage of the word "absence" right?

Can u reframe the same sentence without changing the meaning.

I'm writing a paper about African American hardships for school and I keep on using the terms "freedmen," "freed slaves," and "African American" to describe blacks so as to behave politically correct. However, my paper sounds redundant using those terms over and over again. Are there any other politically correct terms for blacks? Thank you in advance.
