It started as a way to both stop animals from eating the bodies and get rid of the smell. Now though, you can get yourself turned into compost, burned into ash, buried, turned into a diamond, plasticized, and even made into an anatomy skeleton.
But honestly, no one who dies has a choice of how their remains are taken care of if it's not specified in their will. If they even have a will.
