I'm writing a paper about African American hardships for school and I keep on using the terms "freedmen," "freed slaves," and "African American" to describe blacks so as to behave politically correct. However, my paper sounds redundant using those terms over and over again. Are there any other politically correct terms for blacks? Thank you in advance.

"Black" is an okay term for African Americans; however, I am writing a paper for school and "black" is a term that is used in casual conversations, not scholarly essays.

I'd love to call them "Americans" but in the paper I'm writing about how whites treated blacks harshly. If I'll write "The Americans treated the Americans like they were inferior," it doesn't make any sense. Do you get it? =)

The term "colored" was used in the late twentieth century for blacks. I know all these, people. You don't seem to know much more than I do. And I'm only 13

i don't like when they call Blacks "African Americans" i don't hear White people being called "European Americans"... we are all Americans...we are all Humans.... Their skin color is Black.. i think that should be the appropriate word to use if necessary.

coming from a Caucasion American from...I guess Caucasia...LOL. I would say it depends on where you are located and the culture of the area. I live near Baltimore and I hear people say Black all of the time and, of course, ironically the black people call themselves n*****s. Now, I would not suggest that last one of course, unless your black. Which is confusing to me...but I would say Black or African American is the best choice!

Now, hasn't this opened a can of worms? Why not just "American" ? Are they not proud to be American? Do you ever hear European American, Russian American or any other American?? And what about people from South America ? Are they not American? OK, I'll get off my soap box.

How about using their names, instead of referring to them as a group?
If you are willing to work "over-time for your paper, search for names people used back then, why not?
I think people are tired of being "categorized" analyzed, talked about. Why do schools require to write about slavery and hardship?
Why not write about fun stuff, happy times, etc.
I understand that America feels guilty because of unfair treatments in the past, but can everybody just get over it?
I know what it means to be a minority, I grew up like one and I was not different by my skin color, only language and heritage. It's hard to act acceptable in a society where every day someone, or something reminds you how different you are. Now I take it as a blessing, but before it bothered me.
So just call people by name, refer to them as people, try not to use identifications, like "the fat guy" or "the anorexic girl" and as for YOU don't get offended by every little detail others add to identify you, like "the bad kid"
people remember unusual things about others.
I was always identified as "the Hungarian girl" it's OK, if we don't pay attention to it, it will stop.
As soon as the person who's talking doesn't get the reaction he or she won't do it anymore, I proved it!

It is highly incorrect to use a color to refer to any group of people, and it is equally insulting to use that color in small caps "b", when referring to any people.

I would first suggest that you do a family name search.. along with asking the oldest members of your family... do this for yourself and dig deep.( Ancestry.com )can give good free direction.

Now with that you'll probably see that your (family) belonged to a group that was/is discriminated against at one time or another.

You may discover that you in-fact have a variety of people(groups) within you/your family (blood relations)

After this i believe that you will know how to address People from any group.
