Each state will have some sort of outreach to parents of children with Autism -- start with your child's MD and Therapist first -- because they will know the local groups that can be a comfort to you in the early stages of having to raise a child with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

search the internet for articles and books. Join a special interest group for autism, speak with your local physician, speak with physical, occupational, and speech therapists, meet with your special education department at the local or state level, attend seminars on autism, start an autism support group in your area...print an advertisement in the local newspaper about when and where to meet and leave your contact phone number. A local church would probably provide a meeting space. You may be surprised how many parents are looking to share ideas and experiences!!!

Try to get involved in your local chapter of the autism society of america or FEAT (families for effective autism treatment, I think). Meeting parents in your area will be a big help, they will be your best resource. Don't lose hope. There are people out there willing to help you. There is a ton of information in the internet. Good luck.

I myself have a child with autism. You can go to the Autism Society of America web site at www.autism-society.org for starters. There is also Parents Helping Parents at www.php.com.
If you live in the North Carolina area, you can look at TEACCH.

What I've found to provide the best practical resources is the website www.asperger.net. It's a publishing company that has a variety of resources related to autism and Asperger's.
