The technical term for the ringing heard by the calling party on the telephone before the person they are calling picks up the phone is "ringback tone" or "audible ringing tone" or "ringback signal". But that's not very suitable for a story. Try something like:
"She was waiting at the other end of the line for him to pick up the phone...."

I would possibly use "meep meep" as a variation. But "ring" or "brringg" or "beep" is fine. The Road Runner in the Wile E. Coyote cartoons always said "meep meep" - sort of a nasally "beep beep." You have some good answers here.

How about " you could hear the canned sound of the phone ringing waiting for it to be answered."

i think universally "ring ring" of the telephone is understood
beep beep is more of a pager.. unless u specifically state that the phone is very modern and has beepish sounds

Even though phones seldom actually ring anymore, given the prevalence of electronic (vs mechanical) phones, "Ring Ring" is still the accepted convention.

I think ring ring is the most appropriate, but something like "the phone rang" would sound a bit better. bleep bleep just sounds like a car alarm!

I would think that Beep Beep is the most universal.
I always hear people say "hold on my other line is beeping"
That's what I say too.

Just say what the sound's function is meant to convey, like, "I called but the got the 'busy signal' I've so come to dread!" Onomatopoeia is often difficult to "pull off" in the literary sense... especially when it comes to "technology." Moreover, it is better for you to stay as ambiguous as possible here as it will surely & severely "date" your piece of literary endeavor.
