When I turn my computer on, the desktop loads but the system freezes for a couple of minutes before I can do anything

Why does this happen?

I s there anything I can do to stop this?

I got a book from a friend. It was a gift actually. and there was this suspicious stick in the interior side of the book's cover. when I removed the stick... as you can see in the photo, there was a weird thing! I wonder what could it be? could you guys help me out? could it be some kind of spying stuff or something?!

Strangest thing happened after installing the Earthlink software. Seems many of my programs were missing from the start menu/programs....such as, Microsoft Word, the Paint program, Gateway PC camera, Yahoo messenger, the Communications is "empty" as is Entertainment, Games, and System tools. (Plus more). Even the small pics next to our user account names which you click-on to log into are changed. I checked my add/remove programs and they are listed as being "installed" but I have not way of finding them to open/use. (Yeah, I did a file search on many of the programs and the files are still there) I noticed in the All Programs .......next to "Start" is says: install. So, when I click on it a small missing shortcut window comes-up saying "Windows is searching for install2.exe. To locate the file yourself click Browse." ....... but, nothing happens. I can't figure out why installing Earthlink software would cause problems like this.....never had pc problems before. Your help/opinion would be appreciated.......thanks.

I recently got a computer at a yard sale, but it doesn't have a hard drive. I was planning on getting one and installing windows xp on it, and I need to know what hardware the computer has. Like, what kind of video card, sound card, processer, display driver(like, mine has an intel 845g...that kind). But how do I find that out?

I am using Front Page to design some websites but when i finish designing, i upload my page and when the internet explorer settings are normal everything is ok but if i change it to Large it will screw the whole tables and margins! i want to lock the text font size so that it doesnt change at all! I have the habit of using the monitor as a white board. Although the white board is also within my reach, I find it easier to write on the monitor itself because I have to move (and rotate the chair) a bit to reach the whiteboard.
Now my friend is telling me that this is not good for the monitor. Is it true that this can cause damage to the monitor?
