When I turn my computer on, the desktop loads but the system freezes for a couple of minutes before I can do anything

Why does this happen?

I s there anything I can do to stop this?

there must be something running on startup that is using a lot of system resources, go to "run" in the start menu and type in "msconfig" go to the startup tab and uncheck things that look out of place or things that you don't need open at the start of windows.

It is hard to say. It may be malware or a corrupted driver or program.
Go to the Event Viewer and look for the error messages. Right click on them and select properties. List the 4 most recent error messages in a new post.
Why a new post? because by the time you do this your question will be buried.

I,ve never heard of that but I suppose the best and easiest place to begin would be by performing a thorough virus and spy ware scan. Beyond that you need someone more knowledgeable than myself about computer behavior.

When the system is up & running, check for network drives in my computer. By default the system will try and reconnect these drives also if you are on a broadband always on connection your system will be searching the net to try and connect. Unwanted network drives can be removed by rt click and disconnect.
