If the points are supposedly regularly checked, then they would find the fault before a train crashes!

When I was a kid my brothers and I would walk up and down the rail road tracks. There was this black metal strapping with holes about half inch apart. We had to bend it back and forth till it broke just right. then fold it in half, put it between your teeth and whistle so loud. Any way we learned to make music with them. I've looked every where and can't find anything about them. This was late 50s or 60s maybe into the early 70s. thanks

Is there something on the ground that when a train goes over it activates the signal, or is there in the train?

See, in India we never plan or give consideration for the elderly people & phyisically challenged ever! We go on raising d heights of d trains, ( &recently a news went on, there r double deckers too, in trains, to b introduced!!), there by in every rail way stations through out d country, d elderly people have 2 climb up all the steps 2 go 2 the other end of the platform. The step-climbing is not an easy joke 4 even d younger people & it is highly foolish to daily climbing up & climbing down d unending steps @ d railway stations! If one old lady has 2 go from station 'X' to 'Y', see d horrible thing, d poor old lady has 2 climb up from road level 2 railway station level by steps, from there she has 2 climb up one slopy unending steps-horizontal walk-slopy down... travelling in d incredible indian crowds 4 decades...again she has 2 climb up frm station 'Y' slopy unending steps-horizontal walk-slopy down!DONT WE HAVE THE BRAIN 2 PROVIDE AN UNDER GROUND RAMPING SLOPES FOR OUR EASY LIFE?

The train driver he could have jumped and he stayed on? He's not paid to be a hero or put his life at risk people who do are heros

trains are not like cars and run on tracks and yet the people in control of a train are called drivers. Driving a train involves pushing buttons, turning dials and using levers i presume and yet we still call train drivers drivers. To drive a train doesn't even sound good. A better word would be to operate a train or the person in control of the train is the train operator.

So anyone know why train drivers are called drivers and not something else??

I tried to find freight train schedules on Google, but without much luck. I have good memories of watching freight trains with my parents and want to give my kids the same chance.

I cannot believe my eyes when it is reporting that the driver of the crashed Pendolino was 'praised by Richard Branson for trying to STEER the train to safety'. How does that work then?

To continue my previous question in which nody answered about how much of a financial settlement the passenger would get, my previous question was,
"I'm serious, what if the WWE wrestler Umaga was a train conductor and did a beatdown?"

So even if he just strangled them with one hand just hard enough to where it's a firm grip around their neck but not a choke, what if he did that with one hand, snarled and growled in ther face, and he he just "Next time, pay your train fare!", and he let them off the hook and get off at their desired stop?

So, would still be a lawsuit, or would all be forgiven because the slight stangle would justify the fact that they didn't have enough money for their train fare?

Again, just wondering for the fun of it. And to the guy who said my previous question was reported, that was uncalled for and not necessary. I'm just asking something just for the fun of it, that's all.

I currently live in Michigan and work for a steel mill. I have just transferred to our transportation department, where I will learn to drive an engine with a blackbox. I plan on moving to New York city within the year and I am hoping this move at work will give me an advantage in the railroad industry. What I would like to know is what railroad industries are there in NYC and if you believe this move at work will help me get my foot in the door when I move? Any advice is welcome and yes I am use to not having holidays off and odd hours of work. For example I have experienced working 16 hours for seven days straight on numerous occassions along with 7 days with twelve hours for months on end and I have only enjoyed one Christmas and one Thanksgiving day off in ten years. So that is nothing new to me.

I live near New Haven and I want to catch a 6:30 am flight in JFK airport. In order to catch the flight, the trian station would have to be open 24 hours a day. Is it? Thanks!

Also: Does the train go all the way to JFK? If not, how do you get to JFK from Grand Central Station? Thanks again!!!
