I,m in a rut. Need to see some more country side flat on the ground. Like maybe desert seeing no people or cars.Any suggestions.

For one thing, as a passenger on a train you will be confined with many people, so if less people is the point, train travel may not be to your liking. But I would strongly suggest you do not hop a freight. Veeeeeeeery dangerous.

But, if you have a few extra nickles (a lot, actually) you can book a roomette and truly see the countryside without a drunk sitting next to you wanting to strike up some friendly conversation, that he repeats over and over and over..................

That having been said, give Amtrak a call at 1-800-USA-RAIL and find your desert route. Best to pay attention to time from departing station so you don't wind up making your sight seeing sprint by the mesas at 2:41 to 4:10 AM.
