When I was a kid my brothers and I would walk up and down the rail road tracks. There was this black metal strapping with holes about half inch apart. We had to bend it back and forth till it broke just right. then fold it in half, put it between your teeth and whistle so loud. Any way we learned to make music with them. I've looked every where and can't find anything about them. This was late 50s or 60s maybe into the early 70s. thanks

I grew up in rural Louisiana in the '60's and '70's and we did the same thing. We all had them in our neighborhood and drove all the adults insane with all of the noise. I would love to find some to show my kids.

I used to make these at a lumber area in Hope, Ar 1975-1979 they were a shiny broz colored metal and did not rust. You simply bent back and forth to break at a hole drilled area. We used 5 holes bent at 3rd hole with two holes in middle. Everyone could blow them sideways in mouth. We made 2 paper grocery sacks of them and gave out at school. After a few weeks at school and games it was made unlawful to have in possession at school and would get you suspended to have one.
These straps were used to secure large amounts of lumber and cargo on train flatbed cars. If you know anyone who has some of the metal banding let me know. Thanks G.A.

I remember doing the very same thing. I always thought the metal strips were from straps that held cargo on flat cars. Those
strips have been replaced with nylon/plastic materials.

yes, I have been looking all over for them. My dad worked on the Railroad and brought them home for the neighborhood kids in the early 60 s. I really miss them. Hope I find them somewhere!

I had several of these as a kid in Texas in the 60's. I kept one for many years until it finally broke. Would love to have another. If anyone knows where to get one please let me know at kodiak8419@yahoo.com. Thanks so much...
