At the present time all London Underground's recruitment of Train Operators is being done internally - that it the vacancies are only being advertised to existing staff.(As of February 2007) I understand that there is no short term likelihood of this changing in the foreseeable future.
So - you want to be a driver but don't already work for London Underground - how do you get in? The most appropriate route is to join London Underground as a Station Assistant. This will give you a good grounding into the organisation, the culture and the working practices and will stand you in good stead when the time comes that you do apply and, hopefully, be accepted for training as a Train Operator.

it is very very difficult to become a driver for any UK rail company . There are very limited opportunities and a very stiff selection process including a test that up to 70% fail and you can only take twice in your life. You realistically need to contact lots of train operators and see what is available and remember that a number of them only train drivers from their existing staff so you may need to consider another way on to the railway as a first step

Allot of train drivers are taken from existing staff in other jobs so try joining as a cleaner and working your way up. The cleaners job is the easiest to obtain as there is no training for the position, you just pick it up as you go along.

First Capital Connect - Bedford 2 Brighton, Sutton/Wimbledon, Taking trainee drivers with no previous railway experience, I'd keep checking their website.
Yes it's reasonably hard to get through the assessment day, but its fairly hard just to get selected for it, but that's nothing compared to the first year training, assessments etc. But if you don't try you'll never know.
Hope this helps.

Karen is correct. The best way in at the moment is to go for a role as a CSA (Customer Service Assistant). There's lots of advice on how to apply for this role in the link below.

traditionally they're being noted as so. in certainty it is likewise suitable as utilising a prepare no longer in hassle-free terms is composed of working the controls yet watching the music i.e. conserving an eye fixed out for alerts and any possibility or obstruction and being attentive to the countless situations affecting the form of the prepare e.g. weight vs. potential of the locomotive, braking potential, gradients, climate, etc. the motive force is likewise in charge for reporting any problems with the prepare and for ending up minor maintenance if achievable. He has to coordinate between the guidance of the safeguard and the guidance from the administration room ,station and so on and so on so unquestionably they do force the prepare on the music.
