A lot of people say that ALL 4x4s are dangerous and environmentally unfriendly. I own a diesel Land Rover Defender and a BMW Mini Cooper. I have 6 speeding points from driving my Mini but none in the LR. It is too easy to speed in the Mini but it is hard to speed in the LR (0-60 in about 2 hours). The view of the road in all directions and potential hazards from the LR cannot be matched by the Mini or other similar small cars. My LR can, and does regularly, carry 9 people on about 30 mpg. My Mini will carry 2 comfortably on about 40 mpg. My LR has better fuel economy than most sports cars on the road and many 2 litre petrol cars. So why am I penalised so heavily for owning a Land Rover? On the other hand, i see little point in cars such as the BMW X5 - high fuel consumption, high performance and seats only 5; it's just a pose-mobile.
