I want a detailed explanation please so I can award the best answer properally, whoever gives the best argument and convinces me gets the gold :)

I'm looking at getting a 4x4 for the winter, I want to know whats better and why: Automatic Trans or Manual Trans

Some people have said one or the other and said its better, even people who are die hard manual drivers have said AUTO TRANS FOR 4x4

Thank you :)

A lot of people say that ALL 4x4s are dangerous and environmentally unfriendly. I own a diesel Land Rover Defender and a BMW Mini Cooper. I have 6 speeding points from driving my Mini but none in the LR. It is too easy to speed in the Mini but it is hard to speed in the LR (0-60 in about 2 hours). The view of the road in all directions and potential hazards from the LR cannot be matched by the Mini or other similar small cars. My LR can, and does regularly, carry 9 people on about 30 mpg. My Mini will carry 2 comfortably on about 40 mpg. My LR has better fuel economy than most sports cars on the road and many 2 litre petrol cars. So why am I penalised so heavily for owning a Land Rover? On the other hand, i see little point in cars such as the BMW X5 - high fuel consumption, high performance and seats only 5; it's just a pose-mobile.

I was stopped at a stop sign behind a Trailblazer today, (keep in mind I was driving a little bitty Toyota Tercel) and as I patiently waited for my turn, this idiot in front of me put the car in reverse, and started backing up! I just about peed myself... This hasn't been the worst incident, but it scared me to death. What are some of your close calls?

I live in LA, where drivers are generally pretty rude & inconsiderate, but it seems like SUV drivers are worse. Perhaps they feel indestructable, because they're in such a large vehicle. Maybe they're just more narccisstic people in general -- and that's why they feel the need to drive a ******' aircraft carrier down a city street... But they just seem to be more obnoxious. What do you think?

I watched a programme this week with pensioners in their nineties still driving it was amusing but also worrying to see them on the roads.
The amusing part was listening to little old ladies swearing like troopers.

Am i right in thinking double clucthing is using the clutch to disengage gearing to neutral, coming off the clutch and then depressing it again to engage the gear so that you can apply the power quicker?
