A lot of people say that ALL 4x4s are dangerous and environmentally unfriendly. I own a diesel Land Rover Defender and a BMW Mini Cooper. I have 6 speeding points from driving my Mini but none in the LR. It is too easy to speed in the Mini but it is hard to speed in the LR (0-60 in about 2 hours). The view of the road in all directions and potential hazards from the LR cannot be matched by the Mini or other similar small cars. My LR can, and does regularly, carry 9 people on about 30 mpg. My Mini will carry 2 comfortably on about 40 mpg. My LR has better fuel economy than most sports cars on the road and many 2 litre petrol cars. So why am I penalised so heavily for owning a Land Rover? On the other hand, i see little point in cars such as the BMW X5 - high fuel consumption, high performance and seats only 5; it's just a pose-mobile.

I own a Pajero a "Gas guzzler" and like most 4x4 owners we can,t accelerate like morons,we can see further down the road so avoid sticky situations and we cant race (unless you call 0-60 in 60 seconds racing). No the reason people don't like 4x4 is because they cant see past them, next time you are in a queue, sitting in your earned and paid for 4x4 look in your wing mirror and you will see them, bobbing in and out like ping pong balls, it makes my journey less stressful because it makes me smile and a happy driver is a safe driver, by the way nearly half of all road accidents are caused by lack of observation and SPEED

Because they are thick and uneducated.
However you are also missing a point, Your Land-rover like all off roaders has lousy braking performance, especially in the wet, also the handling is iffy to say the least and positively dangerous on cambered country roads, lots of 4 WDs turn over, especially in snowy conditions.
A further problem is that lack of acceleration leads to the lorry drivers technique of keeping the speed up at all costs, and together with poor braking performance this is a bad mixture,
However away from Country lanes where they don't stop or handle well enough to be safe in their natural habitat of the suburbs the speed bump flattening suspension and tyres which take running over Kerbs, bicycles and small animals in their stride compared to cars, and the visibility you mentioned and the enhanced ownership prestige from minor accident damage makes them ideal for the school run.
OK some folk need off road 4X4 s but with proper off road tyres they are simply unusable on the road, so keep your land-rover firmly in the urban areas and leave country roads to proper country vehicles like Pug 207 diesels.

Hallelulia !!!!!!!!!!!! At last somebody who is talking sense about 4x4s and not following the urban sheep who talk out of their backsides about them!
I have a RAV-4 and am changing to an X-Trail. I NEED my 4x4 as I live in the middle of the Highlands. My RAV-4 is currently showing it's average diesel consumption of 48.2 mpg which sure beats the REAL gas guzzlers, Rolls Royces, Bentleys, BMWs, and Jaguars. Would two-Jag Prescott take note.
Being a short 5'4" it is also safer for me as I enjoy the higher seating position so that I can actually see the road ahead. My RAV takes up no more space than a gas guzzler, in fact, probably less. It's emissions are fully compliant with the law as it has just passed it's MoT test with flying colours.
NOW may we all agree to live and let live please!

The reason there dangerous is due to the height of the chassis, if you crash into another car the chassis will be far lower, as the chassis is the strongest part of a car, a 4X4 will take out a smaller car.
As far as 4X4 goes, the only people who need a 4X4 are people who drive on land, so they shouldn't have to pay road tax etc on private land.
