For reliability you have to look hard to beat a VW bug. They are very simple, have no cooling system (Ait cooled) and very little in the way of electronics. You don't have to worry about power seats or windows, not many come with A/C, and the heater is just warm air re-directed from the engine to the passenger compartment. Lots of stuff NOT to have to worry about going belly up. On the down, side they are ugly, have limited carry capacity, and considering the size and weight they are not very frugal with fuel. Now if you want cheap and reliable with some class, get a motorcycle if you handle it and use it most of the year. (I live in Florida and don't own a car, just a bike.)

Have you looked at any Hyundai's yet? I hear that the ones made in the 1980's aren't that great, but I own a 2001 Hyundai Elantra and I love it.
Before the Hyundai, I owned a 1993 Chevy Lumina 1000 times the car as the Chevy Corsica. I owned the Lumina for 8 years and loved this car. I don't know what kind of shape they would be in anymore.

My first car was a Fiat Uno. Absolute gem for a new driver. Cheap insurance, excellent full consumption (Yorkshire to Essex on £20 worth of fuel!) and the 3 years i had it i only ever had to have the clutch slave cylinder replaced, aprox £40 to do. The car was already 8 years old when i bought it so it aged well.
Would also recommend Hyundia, another all round cheap runner.

my very first car was a 1988 chevy berretta gt, that thing lasted until i got my new car, it had decent get up and go power, and it was a tough car, handled well, even after this list of incidents: jumped over train tracks, aggressive driving ( spinning the car around in the road a 180 degrees stuff like that ) jumped into a field, drove into a field, into a ditch, ugh fliped it once, and got it back onto the wheels it still drove, burn outs, topping the thing out at like 127 mph it was in like 3 fender benders, hit a deer, backed into by a SUV, and i was never hurt in any acciedents...ugh lets see, i beat a ford probe in it racing, in my opinion its a really good learning car, it can handle the abuse, besides body work i only have had to replace a clutch at 350 thousand miles, and a new set of tires, o and the AC went out though but still good car....

My first car was a mini. I loved it so much and drove it until it died.
They're really easy to get parts for, and you can fit parts yourself.
Despite being a girl, I bought and fitted a boot lid, new chrome bumpers, wing mirrors and a dashboard.
It's also a great car because no matter what age it is, they still look cool !
A huge part of me wishes I could still drive a mini, marriage and a baby though meant I needed a slightly bigger car !

Any 90's Honda is one of the best bargains for your money. They are a dime a dozen and if you are careful, you can find a nice one that will run for a good long time. They are cool to fix up and economical as well. There are exceptions to every car deal and you may want to have one thouroughly checked out before buying.

Suzuki Vitara soft top. You can take the top off in the summer, you have four wheel drive for the winter, it's fairly economical, fairly cheap to insure, fairly cheap to purchase secondhand and it's a bit different from the norm

My first three cars were Fiat's and I loved every one. Very cheap to insure generally, fairly good mpg, fairly easy to park and not too big. I then went to a Jag and then another, then a BMW now I have a Volvo S70.

Ford or vaxhall, Fords tend to be slightly more expensive on fuel, but for parts they are cheaper. I remember i had to buy brake pads for a peugeot 206, and they cost my over 55 pounds.
