I commute from Berkeley (65 in the summer) to Pleasanton (90 in the summer), so I'd like to set my Auto AC to 72 and leave it there. But I'm worried that it will run the AC compressor even when it's cool outside, thus reducing my gas mileage. So to be very specific: Suppose it's currently 70 degrees in the car, 65 degrees outside, and my Automatic Air Conditioning is set to 72 degrees. Will the Prius still run the AC compressor, reducing my gas mileage for no good reason?

Just in general...

The first time I usually hear a soft high pitched whine when it doesn't start, and then the next time or the time after it seems to turn over and start fine generally. I have had the alternator current and the battery strength checked out and both came back fine. I am guessing there is a set of wires that needs replacement, or part of my starter is going bad. What are your thoughts (and qualifications for answering)? The car is a 99 Corolla with over 100,000 miles on it.

I'm thinking about buying a hybrid Toyota. I'm wondering if it might be possible to retrofit it fairly cheaply to run on E85 in the future if the delivery infrastructure for ethanol ever gets developed. Otherwise I might want to go with a VW or Jeep diesel so I can use biodiesel.

I'm trying to decide whether to buy the 2007 Camry XLE (the top model) with all the options, or the Hybrid with all the options. The cost is about the same, and I would like good performance (since I currently drive a 2002 Civic), but I realize that the OVERALL cost (gas, maintenance, etc.) is probably cheaper with the hybrid.
I need a good opinion on this one. Please help!

I know Toyota is publishing 40 mpg but that's using the notoriously inaccurate EPA method. Anyone actually measure it themselves?

I have a 1998 Toyota Tazz 1.3 litre
When I push my clutch down, and I'm in gear, the car begins to shake a hell of a lot. If the car is in neutral, it does not shake at all.
There is also a squeaking noise when I push my clutch down.

I'm now also struggling to change gears - the gear stick seems almost stuck and I almost have to force the gear stick into gear. When the car is off though, I can change gears fine so I don't think that there is a problem with the gearbox.

What do you think the problem(s) could be? Will it be expensive to fix?

Thanks!

The steering wheel shakes left/right, left right really fast. I've noticed that there are no balance weights on either front tire.Could this be the problem or is it more likely to be a tie rod end?

I asked a similar but very general question yesterday.
I'm starting college at the end of august and im going to be a commuter. My mother is going to give me her 2000 Toyota Corolla, its going to be my first car, it has about around 107,000 miles on it. She says that she had it checked earlier in the year and everything was fine and before she gives it to me she'll do another check and she'll change the brakes.
So my question is, how long do you think it will last- with the right maintenance and tlc?
