I've always pretty much bought US makes, but I'll give the Toyota its due...they are dependable, good on gas, and are relatively low maintenance as long as you do regular fluid and filter changes, etc. Now having said that, there are tradeoffs...for starters, they aren't overly comfortable due to their smaller wheelbase, especially on long trips, and can be pricey to fix if something DOES go wrong...but otherwise they are a decent vehicle overall.
Just bear in mind that when you buy a used car, there can be good and bad vehicles of any make; it all depends on how the car was driven and maintained by the previous owner. If in doubt have the car checked out by a mechanic you trust.
Hope this helped.

Don't know about '98s, but my wife had a '96 that we just traded in this year. It had 150,000+ miles on it and was still going pretty strong. Toyota in general makes good vehicles. Last reports I saw, Toyota and Honda got the highest grades in reliability and customer satisfaction. Of course, it all depends on who owns the car to begin with. You have to take care of any vehicle you own or else they will tank on you.

Yes they are I had a 97 sold it to a buddy currently it has over 1/4 million miles on it and is still running strong.
Contrary to popular belief the single cam shaft toyota engines are crap. the one in my 92 tercel 1.5l ( 3ee enginesingle cam) went out at 130k
The 98 should have a twin cam 1.8 litre and it will drive for a long long time
And to the dipshit that said to buy american that car was made in michican with union labor. From US made parts ( my buddy works at the toyota engine foundry in troy missouri)

Japanese imports such as Toyota, Nisan, and Honda are vary reliable cars. More and more people are buying them over American cars because their dependability. When I get enough money, I'm planning on buying a brand new Toyota Carola Hybrid. Toyota Carolas are known to last.

Yes, these cars are very reliable and fairly fuel efficient. Build quality is very high, typical of Toyota. They are not however, sporty, powerful, or luxurious in any way.
