I bought a custom shift knob for my 2002 Mercury Cougar. The thing is, when you put the manual Cougar into reverse there is normally a ring you pull up to put it in reverse. The custom shift knob doesn't have that and the entire spring is exposed...it looks hideous. I've looked online and nothing seems to be right. The company I bought this custom knob from said it would fit, but suprise, suprise, they lied. So if anyone knows where I could get the correct shift knob please let me know. Thanks alot!

The "trash can" has something that looks like a fan in the bottom part of it. I just got the car and there is no manual to be found in it so I was just wondering what it means and what I need to fix.

I recently installed an Alpine 7894 60W reciever into my Cougar and that along with the cold is causing the battery to not have enough juice to start the car every so often. So I was thinking about going with an Optima red top battery because it has 800 CCA which should be enough to get my car going, but I don't know if the cables are going to reach the terminals. Are there different types of Optima red topes. If so which one would match my Cougar. The terminals on the current battery are red/left and black/right and they are towards the top of the battery looking into the compartment, but since the cables just barely reach these terminals I didn't think they would reach the terminals on the Optima battery that are more towards the center. Can anyone help who has possibly done this before or that knows what battery would fit into my car. Thanks.

There is an argument going on between me and three friends over where Mercury's engines are made. We started discussing it one day, and we've been disagreeing ever since then. I know it's a boring topic, but we're dull people haha...

I had the same car only my old was is a 1997. My 1997 gets on the road 28 mpg probly 22 in town and around but this other one I have purchased is getting poor gas mileage, like 13 or 14 in town and around. Well I can fill it up and set my mileage deal and when it hit 200 miles I am totally empty...on my other one I get 300 miles or a litle more. Could their be a cmputer chip out causing this, where do I begin to find my problem and I know I will eventally have to take it to a mechanic but I thought some mechanic could give me some suggestions, before I spend a great deal of money. We love these cars, but I have to have better gas mileage than this.

I have a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer V8 with the stock 5.0L in it. I love the power and it outruns most things on the road, but I'm just looking to get some more out of it. So my question is, is it possible to swap in a Ford 5.4 Triton out of say a F-150. And if so is it an easy swap that I could do in a weekend or two in my garage. Or is it a swap that I could have done at a shop without spending too much money? I don't care about the legality or insurance implications of the swap. And if you think this is a swap I can do on my own do you have any suggestions or warnings about possible problems I will run into. When I dropping a normal 5.4 out of a late model F-150 and plan on spending some money getting some more power and performance before even dropping it in. Will this extra power cause havoc with my automatic transmission, or drivetrain? Is there parts out there for applications like I'm doing? Has anyone done this before?

My automatic 97 sable gs sedan has 192000 miles on it, car starts and runs fine while in park but when shifted into gear it stalls out. I noticed lurching and a hard idle eariler today but other than that it was running fine. Any sugesstions as to what the problem might be?

I changed the themostat and flushed the system and got a small difference. I was thinking about changing the heater core next. I was told that it could be the Coolant Temperature Sensor or the Temperature Switch/Sender. Does any body have any ideas.
