My automatic 97 sable gs sedan has 192000 miles on it, car starts and runs fine while in park but when shifted into gear it stalls out. I noticed lurching and a hard idle eariler today but other than that it was running fine. Any sugesstions as to what the problem might be?

Their could be two likely possible reasons. Either you have a tranny failure (causing excessive load on the engine) or your engine has a severe lack of power problem. As for the 2nd option... I have run across a plugged catalytic converter causing the exact same complaint.

This is a problem that should be looked at by a mechanic.

Sorry for so little help.

sounds like it could be the torch converter clutch or TCC solenoid is stuck on. If engine stalls immediately because of harsh engagment then it is most likely the tcc clutch and problem most likely in the valve body area.

Sounds like you may need work on your transmission. You should get it checked by mechanic.

It could be the IAC valve, or the tranny is locking up
