I drove a '91 mercury cougar for about 4 years and I don't remember a trash can light, maybe it was just too long ago. Try searching the web, if you cant find it just call up your local Lincoln Mercury dealer and ask them.

Hi I drive a 2000 cougar the "trashcan" you are talking about is actually the coolant light. My light comes on several times. The manual says to check coolant, usually because it is low. I find filling it over the max. line is most effective because that light is very sensitive. Hope that helps.

why do people waste ur time... teh ck engine lite it isn't. so ck all ur fluids. if it has an electrical fan make sure it runs. go to l/m dealer and ask they should tell u without a charge.

that would be your COOLANT light, i do believe, check all your fluids not just coolant tho, if it doesnt go away, dont worry, every ford i have owned had random lights that stayed on, i found if you drive it really hard and punch the dash bezel it goes away :)
