I am a TX resident and and Active Duty military member. I do get a clothing allowance of about 550 a yr., but by regulation I have to conform to certain standards. I get a haircut once a week ($8) plus a tip ($2). This comes out to almost my clothing allowance, plus I still have uniform expenses throughout the year which exceed the allowance. On top of that I also have to pay for gas on a vehicle ($45/week) which I use primarily to, from, and at work. What about my cell phone? I have a cell phone that I use primarily for work communications, can I write that off? I've read about the gas and phone things but I can't find anything on the haircuts.

I have earned 500.00, but I am concerned about having to pay taxes on it if it is $500.00 or over. I know this tax/penalty is about 30+% and would like to avoid it. Any information is appreciated. I live in Texas if that matters.
Thanks!

I want to know if he needs to file return and pay taxes? We (my husband & I) file joint return and we fall in 30% tax bracket. If we include him on our return, does that mean we need to pay 30% tax on his income too? Or he should file separately?

My live-in son would like to start a small business. I would help him, but really don't need the money and would work for free. I realize that as a sole proprietor he would owe self-employment taxes. If we would decide to become partners to make it easier for me to help him with business contacts, would I have to pay self-employment taxes too, making the tax owed on the business double? How would we file income taxes - on a joint business return or on our individual tax returns. I currently file jointly with my husband. We don't expect much of a profit initially, so a double self-employment tax between us would really eat into profits.

I've started doing a lot of freelance graphic art work. Mostly logo design. How much do I need to make in a year to start claiming it? Also, am I supposed to charge sales tax? I usually design their stuff and give it to them as a file and let them get it printed. So, it's seems to me that I'm offering them a service not a good? I'm in Ohio if that matters for sales tax.

Does the local library have any way to take money out of your tax return, when they claim books have not been returned?
My friend used the after hours drop box to return 3 books. When she went to check out more books a few months later, she was told 3 books were past due. She told the woman at the desk, that the 3 books were put in the drop box months back. The woman got real nasty and told her she couldn't check anything else out And that if she refused to pay the late fees, that the library would get that money back from her tax return!!!
Is this true? Can the library take money from her tax return?

My taxes were "underestimated" (according to the tax assessor's office) which resulted in an underpayment by me of $2900.00. This tax increase/bill seems a little high for me (especially since I live in a tax-freeze zone as my house is new construction in a "rehabilitated" town - that is they offered special tax incentives to the builder and future owners to build and live there respectively) for only one year.

Does anybody know whether this type of tax increase is unusual, and if so, what should I do about it? I would like to fight the increase, but don't know whether this is a "normal" estimation process in NJ. Any insight into this problem would be great. Thanks in advance.

I should add that my wife doesn't work, but will be starting a job in three weeks. Should I change my withholding from single to married? If so, how many should I claim? I like the idea of getting more in my check every week, but I don't want to get whacked next April. Thanks in advance for your answers.
