You should claim Married Filing Single with 1 dependent. Your wife should claim Married Filing Single with 2 dependents.

You might be able to pull off Married Filing Joint, for both of you, but that's a lower deduction rate, and you might need to pay, instead of get a refund, next winter.

You have three exemptions on a joint return, assuming that you can claim your child as a dependent. If the child is under age 17, you will get a child tax credit, so you shouldn't have to worry about owing at tax time if you claim a total of three allowances between you and your wife on your W-4's, split however you want to between the two.

If you make less than $57,000, on W4 you can have Married with 2 allowances, otherwise 1 allowance.
Your wife can have Married with 2 allowances.

On the back of the W-4 is a worksheet. Fill it out using your wife's and your incomes. It will tell you what to claim and how.
