My wife and I just got married in June and have yet to change our W-4 forms to married...is this a problem? Do we have to change our forms to say married or can we continue to file as single? Not sure how this whole process works. Thanks a lot.

You can change to married, or keep it as single. You will more than likely get a good sized refund come next April by keeping W-4's as single. I've attached a paycheck calculator website, www.paycheckcity.com, to help you figure out what you should be claiming.

Since you got married, you need to sign a new W-4, not only because your name changed, but your tax status changed as well. You can claim married filing jointly at the end of the year. So a new W-4 will give you a tax break immediately rather than paying too much for the rest of this year.

Your W-4 form only concerns the amount of withholding that is taken from your pay check each pay period. You are not required to change it because of the marriage however you may wish to as they likely will take less in withholding. Families with two income sources frequently have a problem with under withholding so you may wish to leave it alone until you have filed your 2007 tax return.

you can change it but you should get most of this taxes back at tax time, because you at single are at a higher tax bracket than married... It is up to you if you want more money now or later but also if you have stocks or set up a interest bearing account you may want to hold off until next year (Jan 1) to make those changes... Just to be on the safe side...

Some states require you to change it so you can also still make the changes but say married and file under single rate...

Congrats!!

You don't have to. And actrually you would be wise to see how this tax year treats you before you change.

People who automatically think that everyone changes their name at marriage need some educating.
