I am a International student in the USA. I am going to School as a full time graduate student. Last year I paid more than $14000 as school tuition. That money was sent to me by my parents overseas. I am not employed in the United States.
Can I file for a tax refund? Because somebody told me that I can apply for a tax refund on the money I paid for education. If yes how will I do that ?

I have worked at my job in NYC for two years. The first year I owed $900 in income tax. I then requested to have my filing status changed to single-0. Our bookkeeper told me he did it and I accepted his word. Then this year, surprise… surprise, I owed $4,000. After some inquires, I found out that my bookkeeper was not withholding federal or state tax from my commission checks. So, to sum up: I was filled at single-1, I had a very low salary and therefore had a low tax bracket. I was paying taxes for that tax bracket. He never took federal or state tax from my commission checks, which put me in a much higher tax bracket…. Therefore I owed a huge amount of money. I tried to get him to change 1) my filing status and 2) add tax on my commission. He got defensive and started yelling. Nothing was changed. Eventually I went to my boss and asked him to speak with the bookkeeper. My request was ignored. Nothing changed. I kept pushing… talking to the bookkeeper, payroll and my bosses. I was to

My grandma won a $12,500 (ARV) travel voucher and wants to sell it because she needs the money more than she needs to see the world. I know that the tax rate is based on fair market value (FMV) rather than approximate retail value (ARV), so if she used it, I believe it would be based on the amount she used. If she sells it though, would she only pay taxes on how much money she got for it, or on the full amount of the voucher? Please only post if you can provide an educated guess. Thanks in advance!

Taxes are withheld in anticipation of taxes owed. If I have overpaid my taxes for last year by lets say 2000.00 why do i have to claim that as income this year?
In reality they are just returning what is mine from last years income. If i made 50,000 and paid 12000 in taxes and am due a 2000 refund i have no underreported my income for the year i have merely overpaid my taxes. I am only getting back what was already mine.

Put another way, if My tax liability is 10,000 and I pay 10000 then i owe nothing and they owe me nothing. At the end of the year I have taken home 40000.
On the other hand if i paid in 12000 then they owe me 2000 and I am merely getting back my 2000 in overpaid taxes and essentially still only taking home my original 40,000

I have a full time job. I want to do some commercial voice-over work on weekends. The weekend work will not be for an employer, but it will still generate income. How can I keep this extra income from putting me into a higher tax bracket? (I've already maxed out my 401k)

I just recieved a notice from "Chief, Service Center Collection Branch" that my $30.00 refund has been delayed. they want to see if I owe any other taxes. I just successfully completed an "Offer in Comprise" with the IRS. Is this the possible reason for the delay? I am a bit nervous!

I read that medical expenses that exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income are exempt from the 10% penalty. Can these expenses be any kind of medical expenses such as fertility treatment or do they have to be 'lifesaving' or more 'crucial' to preserving your own personal health type of expenses? Does it even matter or can they be any type of medical expense whatsoever? I assume the other 20% penalty always applies even if exempt from the 10% penalty. Is this correct? Help!!!

About Mid April I went to a tax consultant to have my preview years tax reviewed, there was a lot of people there and waited 3hrs, when I got to see him, he told me that my tax would take quite some time and that it didn't matter if it gets done that day or another, so he kept my documents and asked me to come back next day, wich I did just to find out that he wasn't there and the secretary said that we was out. I kept calling and he was never there and one day I just showed up he was there but that night someone forced open the place and left a mess, so he couldn't see me that morning, and told me to come back the next day, I went the next morning to find we hasn't there. The secretary tells me that he will see me in a given day at a set hour to come I had been there already 8 times and the last two I just told the secretary that I only want my documents back, he doesn't seem to have the time to do it and I just want them back. Is there a legall way to get them back? what can I do?

I am a student set to make under $12k this year. I am working 40+ hours a week in a grocery store. Since I make under $12k, when I filed my W4 I submitted that I should have no deductions. On my first paycheck I only worked a total of 12 hours and was not taxed (Just got out of college). The next week, I worked 43 hours and was taxed for my entire paycheck, both federal and state. Is there a law anywhere that requires overtime pay to be taxed? Last year I made under $12k, my company withheld taxes anyways and I ended up getting nothing back thanks to them withholding incorrectly.
