Normally your parents cannot claim you as a dependent any more once you are married. Even if you marry on Dec 31st and they supported you 100% all year up to the marriage, they lose the exemption as soon as you say, "I do!" You would normally file a Joint return with your new spouse to pay the lowest tax. The bar on your parents' dependency claim is tied to the fact that you file a joint return with your new spouse.

There is ONE exception to that rule, however. If both you and your new spouse had ZERO tax liability for the year, both on individual returns and jointly AND only filed a joint return to claim a refund of any taxes withheld AND if all of the other dependency requriements were met then your parents could claim you as a dependent. This is an unusual situation and is rather rare.

If you file a joint return with your husband, and it's not just to collect your refund, you have some tax liability between you, then no they can't.

Otherwise, if they meet all the requirements to claim you, they can. Those requirements would include that you'd have to live with them for over half the year, so if you move out when you get married, then no they wouldn't be able to. If you end up living with them after that, it's possible that they can.

Congrats on the marriage! My wedding is the 16th! As far as I know, your parents cannot claim you, you would file as a couple for this year.

if you continue to reside with your parents for some reason -- like your mate is deployed with the military -- they may be able to claim you as a dependent, but your husband will have to file married single. so long as your parents are providing a majority of your lifecosts for a majority of the fiscal year, they can claim you but that means they include your w2 on their taxes and you will not file.

your parents can still claim you as their dependent this year and you can file for married this year as well. next year, they can't claim you as their dependent anymore.

best wishes!
